A Short History of Business Plans. Somebody on Quora asked for a history of business plans, and Noah Parsons suggested I answer. I searched for an authoritative source, and didn’t find anything that really goes into history. But the topic is interesting to me, and I’ve been dealing with business plans since 1974, so I thought I might at free creative lessons, least add some anecdotal history. My Best Friend! First, an writing lessons, interesting bit of data, a word search on the appearance of the phrase “business plan” in cert history essays ireland books, compared to “venture capital” and creative writing lessons, “entrepreneurship,” using Google’s beta ngram search. It shows the relative use in in the rosenblatt essay books, from 1900 to 2008, of the terms “entrepreneurship,” “venture capital,” and “business plan.”: What I think we see there is how the business plan (the blue line) became really prominent in synchronization with venture capital (the red line) and entrepreneurship (the green line).
There was some kind of a bump in all three in 1907, then a steady increase in entrepreneurship from the late 1960s. Notice how the blue line for free business plan seems to track very closely with the leaving history essays northern ireland, high-tech boom and growth of Silicon Valley, and free lessons, with Venture capital. This fits my anecdotal history, my impression of what I’ve seen in the general area of business plans since I first started with business plans in 1974, through to the present. My earliest references to business plans, back in the middle 1970s, were generally corporate. I had friends and essay, business contacts who were managers of large companies, and they dealt with business plans as annual corporate exercises. My first focused involvement with business plans was in 1979, when I took a course at Stanford called “small business management,” which was in fact a course on developing business plans for seeking venture capital, for high-tech ventures. It was taught by Steve Brandt. As I got out of business school and into consulting with Creative Strategies, and then when I left that company to go out on my own, business plans were a core component in writing all high-tech startups. Leaving History Northern! If you look carefully at the high points and drops, remember that this is book usage, so it’s on a longer cycle than say use in newspapers or magazines.
It takes a couple of years for a trend to show up in a search of books. I started on free creative my own in 1983. I was based in Palo Alto, across El Camino from Stanford, in the heart of the Silicon Valley. There was a huge demand for business plans. Venture capital was taking off, Silicon Valley was taking off, the PC boom was in the essay about my best full swing. That drop in the middle 1990s, all three terms, that shows up on the chart? That was the free, recession of 1992-1993, I think. The PC boom started to settle, but the Internet boom hadn’t started. Then the second big drop in recent times is the checklist essays, aftermath of the dot-com crash beginning in free creative lessons 2000. My personal opinion, not backed by research, and just a guess, is that the term “business plan” is suffering lately from the misunderstanding of the business plan as if it only career graduate essay, exists as a formal document. Writing! In my mind, the format is evolving as tools and capabilities evolve, so that the business plan of today is as valuable as ever, but not as a set formal document, but rather as the first step in planning, to checklist essays, be part of a process that includes regular revision and creative writing lessons, review.

I think part of the problem you point out is that people think a business plan has to be a big formal document written over a long time at great pain, full of elegant carefully worded summaries and papers, descriptions. If people realized it is a plan, not a work of art #8230; In the free creative, good old, bad old days before the checklist revising, explosion of free creative, technology one would talk about research papers, five-year plans as (comparatively) the pace and change were slower. obstacle essay title I’m not sure that I would have put the writing lessons, time or thought necessary to the man in the essay write this essay had it been offered during the time when I attend college. Free. I’ve read Perlstein’s essay several times since I was notified about this essay at the beginning of July. Only now at the beginning of August have I committed myself to sitting down and organizing my thoughts into a manner that others might follow. The reason for my hesitancy to address this issue stems from my anger at career change graduate, being judged from afar and being asked to creative defend myself.
When Perlstein asks “What’s the water by roger rosenblatt, Matter with College?” I read “What’s the Matter With College Students?”. The institution ceases to exist without students, and so, since I am among those who allow colleges to exist, I see this essay as a direct challenge to who I am as a person. “Is the college experience less critical to the nation than it was a generation ago?” It is patently absurd to define the writing lessons, “college experience” when you consider the plethora of papers, diversity among individuals attending college today. This was obviously not so in the 1960’s, and there is no common denominator for comparing the events of the ’60’s with the events of today. The world is a strikingly different place than it was in free creative the ’60’s. The fact that a generation ago a gubernatorial campaign was centered not upon cert the education of college students but upon their behavior indicates two things to lessons me: 1) the lack of integration of checklist, technology most are connected with today and free creative lessons 2) a political scam to direct the nation’s attention away from the man in the water by roger essay more pressing concerns.
In the latter regard, politics has not changed so much. As far as the free creative writing, first is concerned, however, technology, most notably, the Internet has revolutionized the way people absorb life. It allows the opportunity for rapid communication through e-mails, instant messages, and the uploading of pictures. Papers Online. The inherent downfall of rapid communication is creative writing that it is in the water not a forum for all types of communication as thought should be put into some messages. We must put more time into our messages because our audience has expanded and become much less precise. In order to creative writing produce a message that leaves a profound mark, a mark that will not be easily reversed when the next generation of radiography papers, leaders comes around, college students must accept the role that money plays in society. Nurturing ideas based on intellectual merit is creative writing lessons only the first step because ideas cannot put food into my best friend the stomachs of starving children or medicine into the system of free creative, individuals ravaged by a disease that has yet to find a cure. It is not enough to understand material at an advanced level and discuss this understanding with colleagues. Radiography Research Papers. Ideas must be presented in a manner that incites action. Being aware of the commercial potential of lessons, ideas when one begins college allows one more time to ponder which action is best to take.
Along those lines, Perlstein mentions the Internet’s affect on career students in that most experience their “first forbidden book” and such before experiencing college. Free Creative Writing Lessons. Experiencing more of life before attending college allows one to checklist essays discard unwanted paths before traveling too far down them. Writing Lessons. Conversely, one may explore avenues already traveled in more depth once granted the the essay about friend, freedom that college offers. If the Internet allows individuals access to free creative writing lessons more information, then “Why aren’t people paying attention to the campuses?” Perlstein asks. Revising Essays. In the 1960’s, college was an creative lessons asylum for eighteen-year-old boys assigned a number to protect freedom thousands of miles away from their home. There was hardly a person who didn’t know someone who was fighting in Vietnam, or who wasn’t hoping that their brother, son, friend, sweetheart didn’t get drafted. Naturally, college campuses would be a central place for political activism. I don’t know anyone who is fighting in Iraq. But I can recall at least two marches that took place locally in research papers Sarasota last year while I was attending school. It would have been around this time that the forum would have been flooded with e-mails as people voiced their opinions regarding the status of the creative writing, war. Activism no longer occurs solely on the man water rosenblatt essay college campuses or with regards to only American problems.
People are aware of the crises that plague the free lessons, world at a younger age and because of the influence of the media more people are becoming involved. Radiography Research Papers. Since campuses are no longer asylums, people are looking to themselves for writing, answers. A collective effort from individuals of all ages and backgrounds creates a solidarity that perpetuates action. The Essay My Best. Because colleges are more integrated into society, more people can become involved in creative writing lessons putting their beliefs into actions, and college students can extend the work they’ve begun in their undergraduate years after they’ve graduated from college. So is essays northern what college students experience truly less critical to the nation? Perhaps for some students, college is no longer a break from society. However, assuming college no longer is free writing lessons a drastic break from society allows students to checklist essays channel restless enthusiasm into concrete action. Higher education is no less based on intellectual merit because students are conscious of how they are going to apply their knowledge.
I will grant you that the college experience is different but not that it is less critical to the nation. The next leaders will come from this generation. Our college experience is different because society is rearranged differently. Creative Writing. The battles of the ’60’s are not our battles. Although there are aspects of society that demand reform, if college continues to by roger be a radical break from society as we know it, the time it takes graduates to adjust to free creative writing society again is valuable time lost. A four year hiatus from society creates apathy in career essay response to the problems of society. Free Lessons. We cannot advocate making love and not war when the threat of deadly STD’s ravages so many. The adage that ignorance is bliss rings true in most circumstances. Because of our increased awareness of the essay friend, life outside of our claustrophobic sphere, we must accept responsibility for our actions and look forward to a long-term solution that is in free creative writing the best interest of everyone involved.
Jim Morrison said, “There can’t be any large-scale revolution until there’s a personal revolution, on an individual level. Leaving Essays Northern. It’s got to happen inside first.” An institution cannot be responsible for liberation. It must come from within. College matters because it still offers that opportunity for growth, for liberation. Free Lessons. By serving as a stepping point rather than an escape from life, college possesses an ability to influence individuals to career change essay imagine and take action.
It is not enough to imagine the world the way one would like. Free. How easy when detached from the essay about society it is to become trapped in one’s imagination so that it appears as if action is futile. Perhaps college campuses are not the focus of the nation’s attention. Free Lessons. That has not deterred individuals from checklist revising taking action. We’re not going to writing lessons wait around for society to notice what we’re doing. We don’t need acknowledgment from the radiography, media to confirm our accomplishments.
We’re moving forward. There’s no need for imitation. We’re creating our own style, and we’ll add our signature as we go. It was a cheerful spring day, and I was a cheerful admitted student, enjoying the lessons, switch from being judged, to leaving cert essays northern ireland passing judgment. Creative Writing Lessons. Having been deferred in November, I strolled around the University of change graduate, Chicago admitted student reception piling pastries on my plate, enjoying the sweet taste of creative lessons, acceptance. Soon after the reception they herded us into research papers another well-embellished room for a question and answer session. As I listened I swelled with pride, thrilled to be surrounded by the quirky, curious minds I hoped would inspire my own. In the first several questions, forty waving hands demanded to know about their pre-med program, the internships they offered, and what GPA was necessary for some award or another. Free Creative Lessons. Amidst the furious scribbling, I detached from my long-harbored dreams and wondered what I had wished for in the checklist, first place. Now, I am a rising junior at a small liberal arts school, which won me over free creative writing lessons, entirely with its student body. The campus seemed free of the competitive, suffocating air that filled the Q#038;A.
Students genuinely appeared to be invested in searching for and improving upon themselves rather than viciously trying to checklist revising essays one-up each other for trophies to add to their resumes. While ordinarily I might happily report that in the last several years my school has edged up the rankings in the annual college U.S. News #038; World Report, to use market speak: the value added to writing my degree from the increased ranking is outweighed by the consequent depletion of cert history essays northern ireland, interesting future students, who are quickly being replaced by more competitive “organization kids.” Both alumni and current students have fought the administration’s efforts to homogenize incoming classes without success. This leads directly, I believe, to the true heart of the problem. Students are no less intellectual, curious, or interesting than they were in the 1960s and 70s when they stormed the streets, raised hell, and caused parents and politicians alike to grind their teeth in bed. The real culprit is the increasing, nearly unachievable admissions standards set by top tier schools. To be admitted to a school like University of creative lessons, Chicago, or any of its peer institutions, a student essentially has to be an “organization kid.” I’m tempted to resent the upcoming freshman for infiltrating what was a creative, open-minded community.
Then, I recall that my class was similarly ill-received by older students and the freshmen become hard to blame. With such rigorous admissions processes, genuinely interesting and the essay about my best friend interested students are basically forced into the organized majority if they want to attend the most competitive schools. While college admission accounts largely for the diminishing midnight debates in free creative writing lessons crowded college dorms, it doesn’t tell the whole story. Unlike the youth of the 60s and 70s, my generation lacks a defining struggle. This is water not to say that our country is not at war, the facts, of course, stand strongly to the contrary.
However, unlike wars of the past, the effects of this war on the home front are almost entirely unfelt except for the media coverage. For the fortunate many who don’t know anyone serving in Iraq, this war is free lessons happening somewhere else, against the essay about my best a constantly changing, intangible enemy. There is free writing no draft. There are no demands for material sacrifices. Although it may be discouraging, it is hardly surprising that few campuses are up in arms over a war that the general population would hardly be aware of if they didn’t watch the in the water by roger essay, news. As disconnected as many students are from our engagements abroad, compared to our predecessors, we hardly have a culture war at free creative, home. My generation has no banned books and no forbidden music. Essays. The most oppressive law most students face is the drinking age, a law which has been broken since 1920. While an infinite amount of societal ills still stand to be corrected, we have little to rebel against. Free Creative. Our parents don’t stop us from pursuing our interests; in fact, they encourage us to do so at an incredibly early age. When you consider the big three, our parents embraced rock #038; roll, tried drugs some of us haven’t even heard of, and the essay my best friend forced books with funny pictures on free us to begin our sexual educations before we were old enough to read.
Yes, for in the by roger rosenblatt, some this might be an free creative writing lessons exaggeration but undoubtedly our parents and society afford our generation more freedoms than our parents ever dreamt of before they escaped to college. And so, inevitably, the about friend, gap between childhood and free creative writing lessons college has decreased. That said, the gap between college and papers online the real-world has never been so expansive. Students are not the only group that has changed due to free lessons increased competition; colleges must compete with one another for applicants to boost those beloved selectivity ratings, the rosenblatt, popularity contest used to determine the writing, value of a degree. As colleges work to gain a competitive edge with students, and more importantly with their parents, they become more student-friendly, or according to some, more juvenile. Radiography Research. On a typical college tour, parents and their offspring will hear about the school’s strong academic support systems, their caring advisors, the RA who will live in their dorm and serve as a surrogate parent, the student counselors and advisors who will be on every floor in free lessons case a student needs any kind of the essay about, help–the changes alumni may note when they visit their alma-maters are no accident. Free Creative Writing Lessons. Colleges, especially the change essay, smaller schools, strive to creative lessons hand-hold. This year an alumnus of my college returned to teach two whirlwind courses on jazz and the art of criticism and I was fortunate enough to be his student. After our final class, I guided him to a meeting across campus and on the way he recounted stories from his college days. His memories sounded more like tall tales than genuine recollections of the man water by roger, four years at writing lessons, my college: swearing at the college President when he refused to give an leaving cert history northern honorary degree to Louis Armstrong, all day sit-ins on the field while desks sat empty.
His stories force me to concede that the college experience is certainly different now than it was twenty or thirty years ago. But while nostalgia may tug our heart strings, the creative, differences don’t necessitate despair. Activism hasn’t become extinct, it’s become smarter. Given the market-oriented world my generation has grown up in it is cert history ireland no surprise that we’ve learned money listens to money. I’m confident any environmentalist could give you one thousand reasons our earth is creative writing lessons worth saving but she also knows that if you want a company to go green, passionate, incensed speeches won’t go nearly as far as financial incentives.
Fewer students may be thrown in jail from protests, but more students are involved in micro-financing. We may not be able to call up famous musicians and persuade them to play impromptu concerts but we can keep our favorite artists in research our pockets and listen to them at any moment. True, college communities are less contentious than they once were and are no longer the hip breeding ground for youthful counterculture; but, college and its students have only naturally evolved with society and competition and writing lessons that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. In The Water By Roger Rosenblatt. As the poet prophet of all college generations wrote, “the times they are-a-changin’.” As a college student in today’s society, am I allowed to be a little skeptical about free writing lessons, my generation? Am I allowed to wonder if we are all going to be okay when all the grownups of today are replaced by us? I have to papers online wonder, will we finally be forced to be responsible and act like we care about what is going on around the free creative writing, world and in this country? I can only imagine the checklist revising essays, scoffs and creative the eyes that are rolling as some people read this. How could I be so judgmental about my own generation?
We’re so different! We’re so great! We’re going to be just fine…right? I wish I had a little more faith in the people that I go to school with and those around the country that share my woes of trying to complete an radiography research undergraduate degree. But part of creative writing lessons, me cannot bring myself to have this faith. Sure, we work hard: we get up, go to our classes, are involved in extra curricular activities, and work a part time or full time job to put ourselves through school. Checklist Essays. But who has the time for news, for politics, for caring about a war and the constant infringement of the American people’s privacy that this government is signing bills to continue? Who honestly has the time, or better yet, who actually cares? For the small number of us that do, what is going on right now in this society and in this world is free writing scary, and radiography papers action is needed. Some sort of noise should be coming from college campuses where the ever so sweetly labeled “leaders of tomorrow” reside. But put your ear to the entrance of a college campus and free writing the only thing you’ll hear are parties or nothing at all (evidence that students are studying).
I guess some of us just feel untouchable. That nothing will affect us, because lets be honest here…nothing has. Century to century, era to era, generation to generation, societal issues remain constant. Change Essay. Nothing new is happening but how we address it and embrace it has changed. The students that roamed the college campuses in free writing lessons the 60s and essays northern ireland 70s had a purpose.
Things were different: there was a war waging that many thought should not be fought (wait, is free writing lessons that happening now too, in Iraq?), equal rights for revising, blacks, and women were already in free creative lessons the constitution but were not being practiced (isn’t the Supreme Court thinking about banning a woman’s right to change graduate essay choose?) things were just different. Or were they? The difference between then and now is not the institution itself, but rather the lessons, students attending and revising their life experiences. College is expensive now and writing lessons it seems that the government is paying for less and less of it, therefore paying for history, school has become increasingly more difficult. The students of today are told that without an education they will go nowhere in life and that, in essence, without college almost all of their sentences will be followed with, “would you like fries with that?” We are frightened with ideas that we could be homeless, jobless and, without the ability to do anything without a college degree. For the free creative lessons, students of the the man by roger rosenblatt, 60s and 70s, things were different. A good job didn’t require college; it enhanced the creative, ability of research, gaining a better paying job and free lessons allowed the freedom of not going into the family business. Things were just different. Most of the about my best, students that went to free writing lessons college in those days were the wealthy, the inspired, or the extremely intelligent.
Most of the time the college campuses of yesteryears were filled with students that wanted to be there, and that wanted to research papers change the world they lived in. These days, college students want a way to make money, a way to have some stability in life, or are being forced by parents that want this kind of stability for their children. Free Writing Lessons. There are some that are inspired, there are even some that are extremely intelligent and checklist essays there will always be those that are wealthy. But let’s just say that these days a lot of kids go to free creative lessons college because it is what is expected, not because it is something that is wanted. What some of the students of today lack is change graduate passion, and without this want to change the world, there aren’t many “movements” on college campuses. In the past at free lessons, Berkley, Stanford and at various other colleges there were students being beaten for their words, for research online, their actions, for their standing up against the government. Creative Writing Lessons. Today, we don’t really have that. Graduate Essay. Not many march and creative writing lessons gather for what they believe is right and true.
We never watched our parents fight or march or gather against a war or a proposed bill that they didn’t believe in. Our parents woke up, went to revising work and creative writing made money so that us kids could go to school and have it easier. Our parents were fighters, but a different kind. So yes, college campuses may be different. Career Graduate Essay. College as was known to the people of the past is drifting away and breaking apart. But some of us on lessons these campuses are trying to papers online make a difference. Clubs and organizations on campuses are trying to inform the student body of what is going on free lessons around the world and in our environment. We are trying to career change essay open the eyes of the free creative writing lessons, students on career campus but it is hard to inform a student body that doesn’t want to be informed. I have heard several of my peers state that they don’t worry about the future.
The fear of no social security does not plague them. The fear of women not having the right to choose or countless amounts of writing lessons, soldiers going overseas to fight a war that seems never ending does not make them lose sleep. These are the students that don’t want to know and don’t care to know about the genocide in Darfur and the bombings that occurred in Lebanon. What a surprise it will be for my generation when the problems of this world cannot be solved with as much ease as they believe. A friend of mine once said, “Why should I worry? The grownups are handling it.” I failed to the man in the by roger essay mention to her that one day, we would be the grownups and that we would have all of these responsibilities to deal with. As was brought out in the article “What’s the Matter with College?” by Rick Perlstein, the free creative writing lessons, college campuses of the 60s and 70s and the students that populated them are long gone.
Now this society is stuck with us, my generation, that we can only hope will grow up sooner or later. Those of us that do worry about our society and about this world, might be those that help save it. Maybe we’ll be the journalists that inform the people (that by radiography, that time will want to be in the know), or the free creative writing, environmentalists and scientists that will be working to about my best better our world physically, or maybe my generation will produce the honest politicians that will work their hardest to free writing better this world and this country. I guess the research papers online, cliched phrase of “only time will tell” holds true here. A few weeks into my second semester at college, a close friend of mine attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute called me one afternoon and greeted me with a declaration: “I decided that college is basically just high school, only you live away from home.” I immediately agreed with her. In our suburban high school, every student was encouraged to free writing lessons work hard, apply to several colleges, and plan on attending at least community college after graduating. Consequently, instead of escaping all the intellectually and culturally deprived people with whom we had grown up, we simply met new ones. Why? Because today, going to college is just what you do.
Students are now taught that to be successful, a college degree, not the college experience, is necessary. Perhaps this is by roger true, but one must consider the truth in the fact that both the college experience and the college student of today are extremely different from those of thirty or forty years ago, and the college experience is no longer as culturally or intellectually relevant in students’ lives. The 1960s and 1970s marked a time of free creative writing lessons, revolution – both political and cultural – on the national stage. JFK and the Space Race, Communism, The Graduate, the radiography research, Vietnam conflict, The Beatles, Edward Albee, the free writing lessons, Civil Rights Movement, the Beat Generation, Woodstock, The Godfather, the Kent State shootings, “blaxploitation” films, and countless other events and creative revelations took the country by storm, and history northern ireland the youth promptly embraced the good and protested the bad. “The times, they are a-changin’,” sang Bob Dylan, and, riding the crest of the creative writing lessons, wave of change, the research, youth united. From their parents, the Baby Boomers developed a strong work ethic; from society, they received encouragement to speak their minds and focus that work ethic on free lessons instigating change. Today, society does not encourage us to use our minds to change graduate essay change the world, but to use our education to achieve financial stability and material success.
The radicals of free creative writing, forty years ago are now the adults of today, advising all students to attend college, “earn” a degree, and enter the the man in the water by roger essay, work force. However, these students lack not only the motivation to broaden their horizons, but they also lack the work ethic and sense of unity characteristic of the free writing, Boomers. With the further advances of technology, the career change graduate, youth have grown more and more disinterested in the world around them. Free Creative Writing Lessons. The Boomers grew up watching news reports on new color televisions each night with their families; today, children grow up playing video games, watching reality television, and sitting at the computer. Rosenblatt. There is little political or social awareness in students, and often, even when there is awareness, there is no interest. Free Creative Writing. Also advancing with technology is the isolation of today’s youth. The college students of the ’60’s felt alienated from the older generations, but contemporary young adults are alienated from each other. Technology assists young adults in online uk communicating without ever seeing each other, which is free evident at colleges. Students meet each other online through community websites like Facebook.
They talk with their professors through emails, and with each other through instant messaging, even if they’re in rooms across the career graduate essay, hall from each other. During breaks in class, students don’t talk to each other – they stick their ear bud headphones in creative lessons and switch their iPods on, or step outside to use their cell phones to call someone else. About Friend. These students simply don’t have the sense of community that students forty years ago had that was formed by both society and writing lessons college. The college experience is research papers as different now as the students are. Free Writing Lessons. The college life that Mr. The Essay My Best. Perlstein and Mr. Mitchell recall “revolved around the dorm lounge,” where students would argue and debate with each other and with the creative writing lessons, great minds of the day. The Essay My Best. Today, the college experience often revolves around the party. Students aren’t skipping class to lessons argue about various issues of the day – they’re skipping class because they have hangovers. The youth of today don’t go to college anticipating cultural and intellectual stimulation – they go expecting to do whatever they want, when they want to do it. No one makes pushing creative limits their priority.
The average student’s state of mind isn’t looking for growth and research online fulfillment; it’s avoiding responsibility and growing up for creative writing lessons, as long as possible. Radiography Research. Mediocrity is not only accepted: it’s desired. Those looking for cultural, social, and political enlightenment are the minority, not the majority, and this is lessons where college actually hinders the students’ growth. Colleges view books advertise (rather shamelessly, one might add) all their impressive resources and spotlight their most successful students, but these booklets are deceiving, and, as one student Mr. Perlstein interviewed pointed out, aimed at parents, not students. The students featured in such marketing schemes are always intelligent, creative, and ambitious. The problem is, these students do not represent the majority of undergraduates.
These students are the ones who have managed to overcome the banality of college today to seek cultural and career change intellectual fulfillment on their own. Mr. Perlstein noted that, “You used to have to go to creative writing college to research discover your first independent film, read your first forbidden book, find freaks like yourself… Now, for even the most provincial students, the Internet, a radically more democratic and diverse culture – and creative writing lessons those hip baby-boomer parents – take care of the problem.” However, even though many students do arrive at college having been exposed to new material already, they are still all at incredibly varying levels both intellectually and culturally. Mr. Perlstein’s interviewees are evidence of this: Ms. Ouwerkerk is a “cog in the organization…the bureaucracy that schedules students’ self-exploration” that has been described as while Mr. Morris is an artist who finds his fellow students to be “so insanely uncreative…and proud of northern ireland, it.” This lack of creativity is especially difficult to overcome. Preparation for college has become almost solely academic, not intellectual, and while admissions committees claim they look for creativity and originality in their students, the emphasis is still placed heavily on SAT scores and grade point averages. Thus, the focus in high school is on scoring high on free creative writing lessons that standardized test and passing with high grades – at the expense of the arts.
At the online, same time, colleges have ceased to lessons operate primarily as schools: as small businesses, they are all about the career change, numbers. Their priority is creative writing lessons no longer education – it’s how many students apply, how many they accept, how much tuition and room and board are, how many students continue to graduate school. Such changes seem small and irrelevant to the college experience, but they really have stunted it quite significantly. College and the American public’s perception of it have changed by leaps and bounds over the past forty years. No longer the center of political and cultural movements, colleges only appear in the media when money, sports, or catastrophic events are concerned.
The changes in the today’s youth, society, and colleges themselves have ended the era of the old “college experience.” Emersion in culture used to be the norm; now it is the about, exception. Perhaps in time, the students who still revel in cultural and intellectual exploration can revitalize college, bringing it back to what it used to be: enlightening, illuminating, and actually relevant. Rick Perlstein argues in “What’s the matter with College?” that college campuses have lost their centrality largely due to the lack of radicalism that is free writing generated on campus compared to the vibrant, radical, take-over-the-administration-building late 1960’s and graduate early 1970’s. Free Creative. College students, Perlstein laments, have become hyper-aware advocates of business-speak and difficult admissions standards. Colleges have lost their place as incubators of radicalism, and no longer provide a “discrete experience” that provided a “radical break” between childhood and the “real world”. Yet Colleges and Universities are perhaps more significant socially, culturally, and economically than they ever have been before.
With no raiding of campus buildings to do, how can the modern college student possibly prove his/her worth to career graduate essay society at lessons, large? If politicians fail to rail against about my best the depravities of college campuses, then how can they be relevant? This past fall, nearly 18 million college students were enrolled in the 4,216 institutions of higher education that grant degrees in the United States alone, up from the 12 million 25 year ago. And it’s not just the free creative writing lessons, number of students that have increased: between 1993 and 2003, minority college enrollment rose nearly 51 percent. This year alone, colleges and the man water by roger universities in the United States are estimated to confer nearly 3 million degrees. On campus, there are more clubs and organizations for free, a college student to online uk get involved in than ever before.
At Purchase College (SUNY), a relatively small (approx. 4,000 undergraduates and a handful of graduate students) public university where I attend, students can choose from an ever-growing list of extra-curricular activities: The History Club, Students in lessons Free Enterprise (a business club that works with the local high school students), Concerned Students Against the War, The Cheese Club (for those interested in the appreciation of fine cheese), a student run a cappella group, three newspapers (two of them entirely student run), The Philosophy Society, The Root Beer club (for those interested in research papers uk the appreciation of fine root beer), a student run radio and television station, a gay and lesbian student association, a swing dancing club, The Organization of African Peoples in free creative the Americas, Hillel (a Jewish student group), and a host of change graduate, other organizations that I’m sure I’ve forgotten. What’s more, these groups are open to any student regardless of skill level, sexual orientation, gender, race, creed, or religion. Colleges have done more than adopt the language of cultural inclusion; real cultural inclusion and free creative writing lessons immersion (defined as exposure to identities and traditions that are not your own) have become an important part of the college experience in the 21st century. Had Douglas Mitchell gone to, say, Princeton instead of career essay, The University of Chicago in 1965, he would have found eating clubs that refused to free creative writing lessons admit women to radiography papers their ranks (not officially connected to the University, but an integral part of the Princeton experience, even today). Perlstein is correct on lessons one count: the college campus of the essay my best, today no longer acts as an incubator for radicalism; an island paradise that allows students to prolong exposure to the “real world”. Yet colleges, as well as society at large, are better off for this shift and as a result, colleges have become more, not less, central to the world around them. In 2005, 30 percent of college students volunteered in their local communities, an increase of nearly 20 percent from 2002. According to The Corporation for National and community service, nearly one third of the time college students spent volunteering in 2005 was spent in educational or youth service organizations.
Student volunteerism is free creative writing lessons not simply a spring break activity: 44 percent of college student volunteers spend 12 or more weeks a year with the same organization. Cultural and Societal change need not be vocal; college students in 2005 may spend less time talking with beatnik scholars, isolated on their island free from cert history essays adult responsibilities, but the college experience is increasingly about assisting others, and using University resources to do so. Increased volunteerism by college students is a situation where all parties involved benefit: college students learn about free lessons, other cultures and use their skills to help their communities, the community gets assistance from online a willing army of free creative writing lessons, volunteers, and the college campus itself becomes a symbol for real socioeconomic change within the community. A college or university that situates itself at the center of the volunteerism movement becomes more relevant, not less, to the community that surrounds it and to essay the country at large. What’s more, college students increasingly find creative ways to bring the culture of campus to the outside world. Facebook.com, a social networking site for college and high school students was started by free creative lessons, Mark Zuckerberg while he was still a student at Harvard. In just over a year, facebook claimed more than 11 million users worldwide, with the number increasing daily.
Thanks to the internet, the my best friend, importance of college campuses isn’t restricted locally, or even nationally; college students can affect change internationally in a remarkable amount of free lessons, time. It is still on campus, though, where young entrepreneurs find their business partners, develop their business models, and perhaps even find their first investors. Papers Online Uk. Perlstein laments the infiltration of the business world on free writing to college campuses, but perhaps the opposite is true. Today, the business world is as influenced by the day-to-day activities on college campuses (and not just consumption, either) than vice versa. Rick Perlstein is checklist revising correct: the nature of colleges (and college students) has changed in America. Perlstein views this change as a fundamental loss of innocence among America’s young people, and writing argues that this loss of innocence will ultimately result in negative consequences for history ireland, both college students and American culture in the aggregate. Yet Perlstein’s logic of noise and discontent equaling progress and centrality fails to lessons hold up to a fundamental 21st century reality: college is still college, but the experience of a quarter century ago can not be replicated, even if that was the intention of leaving cert history northern, a college or university. The change that college students effect today may not be as politically exciting as building takeovers and university-wide sit ins, but is free writing ultimately more culturally, economically, and socially significant than the changes of our forebears. The college campuses of the 21st century are teeming with life, diversity, and cultural significance. We need them now more than ever before. I’m in the office by 8:30, even on the mornings I’ve hit snooze a half dozen times and finally managed to drag myself out of leaving northern, bed only ten minutes before the bus comes.
If I haven’t hit a Starbucks before I arrive at work (there are two on my way), I stop first at the industrial coffee maker in the break room. Free Creative Writing Lessons. I can’t figure out how to make the coffee stronger than brown water, so I load it with sugar, to ensure I get at least some sort of chemically-induced energy kick. Reading and responding to essays emails carries me through 9:30, when I begin to work on whatever project I didn’t finish the day before. My boss continues to send me documents that might be helpful in my summer report. A brilliant professor once told me to free lessons “Always be done” with whatever assignment I was working on, in case a deadline was suddenly moved forward (great advice). With this in mind, I spend the morning frantically struggling to incorporate the new material into my text, preemptively answering the questions I’ll get thrown when I defend the project, while still keeping the Executive Summary to the standard one-page maximum. It is a futile effort, though; things have the propensity to be meeting’d to death, and regardless of essays, what new brilliant evidence I manage to present, approval will still always be one meeting away. As an intern, you often get only free creative writing one chance to present your work to upper management. My opportunity is scheduled for this Thursday: in a half an hour of checklist, my boss’s boss’s time, I’ll stumble through my proposal and, if it’s the slightest bit out-of-the-box, hear, “That’s a really unique idea. But I don’t think it could work in this company as it is. Bring it to me again next month.” So you do, and if you’re lucky, you get another shot.
My “first-chance meeting” will be a phone conference, which makes it frighteningly difficult to gauge the reaction of my audience and appropriately adjust my tone. Free Creative Lessons. Silence could mean the senior manager on my best friend the other end is lessons thoughtfully pondering my ideas, that I’ve completely offended him and the entire organization on top of it, or simply that our connection has been dropped. Any of those three options is, to say the least, less than ideal. My second meeting will be more of the revising essays, same: Good work, but not here, not yet. Try again, come back in writing a month. Change Graduate Essay. Then you have to bitterly remind your boss, and his boss, that you can’t try again in month, because you’ll be back at school and no longer their summer intern. Does anything ever change? Does anyone ever pick up where the free creative writing lessons, intern leaves off? Could it really be a complete waste of forty hours a week, for ten weeks? I check the internet news headlines to see if hell’s broken loose in the real world and dial into the noontime conference call.
As I listen to the essay about friend the weekly call and try my best to writing decipher what’s going on so I can construct the minutes, I pull on my sweater to fend off the over-air-conditioned clime and think about the man water essay, how excessive all these meetings are. No one will read my minutes, save my boss, who will check them for glaring errors before distributing them; no one will get around to implementing the free creative writing lessons, project I’ve been prepping all summer. There are positive aspects to the internship, though: I’m absorbing interesting and useful information, and research uk I enjoy being part of the camaraderie of my coworkers. Writing. And, this experience will likely flesh out my purely theoretical knowledge from research papers online classes and creative books. But, there’s always a little voice in my head who chants, most audibly during all the meetings, “You’re wasting your time.” After the meeting I grab lunch from the food court in the mall that inhabits the first two floors of my oversized building, watching people not too much younger than I mill about with their friends.
I flirt with the guy serving me lunch to remind myself that I, too, am young, still a college student. For ten minutes I cling to my youth, pretend to not care about the resume I’m trying to build, and dash outside to warm up in the July sunshine. The rest of the afternoon drags on uneventfully. At 3:30, emails begin to fly back and forth from research papers friends still in the city for the summer, most of whom are interns as well. Plans for the evening slowly take shape: open air concert at Millennium Park, someone brings the wine, someone else brings the cheese and crackers. The distribution list is oddly formal, with some variety of free, email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org; no one uses the typical email@example.com, as is the usual during the research, year. During the day we talk about corporate policy, management efficiency, and certifications.
After 5o’clock, I walk to the public transit station, ride the El to the lush green lawn of the free, park, and go home to my super energy-efficient apartment (no a/c). I live the career, personal version of the free writing lessons, corporate environmental policy I propose day in and day out. I enjoy being responsible for my activities, instead of having to run them through meetings; knowing my impact on the world around me, rather than guessing at electricity consumption from 100 global locations; interacting as part of a thriving, positive urban experience, and not as another worker bee in a 37-story, glass hive. I revel in summer life as a carefree intern, in in the water essay a city I have only known as a deadline-driven college student. After the concert, we end up at lessons, our apartment for a late dinner.
The progress of the online uk, graying charcoal in free creative lessons the grill mirrors the path of our conversation from local politics (grey around the edges), to the essay friend our philosophical place in the world (hot enough to writing cook the food), to finally whatever pop culture report came through the tabloids that day (disintegrating into a dust pile on by roger essay the bottom of the grill). We all begin to feel the exhaustion from a life we are not used to: early mornings, eight hours at free writing lessons, a desk, the daily commute. We draw out the leaving history essays ireland, last hour, sad to end our evening and break up the surrogate family gathering. The first eight hours of my day makes me feel worn and tired, while the second eight reinforce my youth and vitality, the free, true college experience. I can dream and work hard and leaving essays ireland pretend like I’m denting a gigantic company, but it’s like throwing pebbles at an elephant. The elephant will probably not feel the sting of the pebble, and free creative writing lessons even if it does, it will take a lot more force to essay change its direction. It’s a completely ineffectual exercise, unless I find something else to free writing take away from it. New knowledge, life experience, the opportunity to discover myself and my interests; those are all worthwhile things to gain, from both the checklist revising, intern experience and the student experience. There will be time to redirect elephants in the years to come, and for now I’m content to just test my aim. Why vote or otherwise be politically active? Many college students do not see the use, even if they care about what is happening in the world.
The culture inside the Beltway is largely culpable for this widespread political apathy amongst today’s undergraduates. College students are faced with two unfortunate options when going to the polls: they can vote for the party that makes lots of campaign promises, but in the end accomplishes nothing because they are cowards who would rather get re-elected than actually take a hard line and stand up for American moral and ethical standards; or they can vote for the party that reminds them of the takeover of the free creative writing, Galactic Senate in Star Wars. In many ways, Dick Cheney resembles Chancellor Palpatine – always hiding in the shadows, and manipulating the government, in twisted ways that the nation has never witnessed, towards his own personal gain. He is research papers online even damaging his own health with the overwhelming prevalence of dark energy flowing through his body – this might explain some of his heart problems. George W. Bush resembles Palpatine’s chief henchman, Anakin Skywalker, who was drawn to creative the dark side to graduate essay save his family. In Bush’s case, he started a bloody nonsensical crusade to protect his fellow freedom-loving democratic countrymen. Though Hillary Clinton is doing an abysmal job playing Princess Leia to free help lead the leaving ireland, charge against the dark side, the unfortunate Star Wars analogy extends further. Democrats passively stood by, just as Senators did in the Galactic Senate when Palpatine asked for his executive powers to be temporarily extended to protect them from a threat to their cherished way of creative writing, life, just like the Patriot Act.
Our armed services are being used to fulfill political motives just like the checklist essays, Clone Army in Star Wars. Our government seems to blatantly disregard the fact that our soldiers are human beings, continuing to send many people who signed up for free creative writing lessons, the reserves during peacetime on as many as three extended tours of Iraq and research online Afghanistan. In this war, instead of college students, the creative lessons, reserves have been the main ones bearing the unfair, unjustifiable burden. Voters expressed widespread disapproval of the about, administration’s handling of the wars in creative lessons Iraq and Afghanistan in change the midterm elections, yet Bush has ignored the voters and plowed ahead, implementing a surge, rather than beginning the troop withdrawal process. Baby boomers were confronted in their youth with the aftermath of World War II, the free writing lessons, Korean War, the Red Scare/McCarthyism and, as they matured, the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War. These threats had direct impacts on their daily lives, leading them to fervently protest. They were forced to take a stand in large part because their own lives were at checklist essays, stake. Today’s undergraduates have never had their friends involuntarily shipped off to free their deaths for in the water by roger essay, a cause that they did not believe in. We have never experienced anything that has compelled us to free creative writing take a strong political stand.
College students have been lucky to always be able to radiography research papers take freedom and democracy for writing, granted; we have never had to the essay make any personal sacrifice, either justified or not, for the greater good of the country. Even though our country is currently fighting the “War on Terror” the average citizen has suffered minimal to no change (except at the airport) in his daily routines. Many would even argue that life is better now than it was during the 90’s because of creative lessons, lower taxes. Students have never been faced with a significant enough challenge to garner a response of the magnitude seen during the 60’s and 70’s. Current events frustrate me and, at times, make me angry, but without suffering any personal or societal sacrifice, there has not been a significant enough incentive for me to the essay my best friend actively protest against the wars in Iraq and free Afghanistan. In this day and age being arrested for civil disobedience could easily blackball one’s employment prospects, so one needs to be sure that protesting against our government can make a demonstrable difference. In many ways it feels like the days of essays ireland, McCarthy. Creative Lessons. Many do not want to essays be accused of being unpatriotic now, in the same way that people did not want to be accused of being communist then. College students did not actively protest McCarthyism, like they did against the Vietnam War, probably due to these same un-American apprehensions. For a protest to have an impact, large numbers of people need to free agree on how they want the status quo changed.
For example, in response to my best the Vietnam War, people wanted the draft to free lessons be stopped and for troops to be brought home. The current anti-war movement cannot agree on whether it wants troops brought home immediately, or slowly withdrawn. Without a clear direction, any anti-war movement will be hard pressed to gain traction. Frankly, I do not know what I could hope to accomplish by marching in protest. We do not have any politicians who are willing to truly embody this pervasive dissatisfaction with how the “War on Terror” is developing. Then why are college students not discussing these issues in the essay public forums like they did during the 60’s and 70’s? Though voting numbers are incredibly low for 18-24 year olds – still nearly half vote and do discuss political issues. It is unfair to make a generalization about all college students.
A major issue is the politicization of the press, which makes it increasingly difficult to find credible objective information about what is happening in the world; without any personal stake, many college students simply cannot be bothered to bolster the extra effort to keep up to date on current affairs and form their own opinions that they are willing to fight for. Fear of being labeled unpatriotic by an executive branch that wields unprecedented power, has greatly hindered American political discourse. All too often it seems that people read/listen/watch the news that they agree with. For example, hard line conservatives watch Fox News, and liberals read the New York Times. Of the students who would consider being more politically active, many are too busy to sift through the news sources and decide whom they are willing to believe. Without easily accessible raw objective data, it is more difficult for many college students to formulate their own potential political solutions. Free Creative. And without these ideas to discuss with their friends, we find that there is waning amount of political discourse amongst college students.
If there were a challenge that compelled a response, I have no doubt that today’s undergraduates could quickly band together through the internet, rather than in water by roger rosenblatt the streets as their parents did during the 60’s and 70’s. Creative Lessons. Mass communication no longer necessitates a large rally to provoke media coverage and spread the career change essay, word. College students can communicate amongst large numbers without the help of the press through media like email, Facebook, MySpace, and free writing YouTube. My fellow college students and I are more than capable of being active responsible political participants, but we need something to essay believe in. Creative Lessons. I call on politicians from both sides of the aisle to give us something to advocate for, rather than forcing us to be witnesses to a perpetual discouraging state of partisan stagnation. On Monday, May 4th, 1970 a group of about 2,000 students at Kent State University gathered at Commons area to protest in response to the invasion of Cambodia, as had been announced four days earlier on checklist revising national television by President Nixon. Free Writing Lessons. The National Guard was ordered on the grounds to disperse the crowds, as was a call to open fire on the students. What followed was one of the bloodiest riots in a college campus in American history. There were four casualties, and nine wounded students. America was shocked. Though the leaving cert essays ireland, Kent State Massacre was a blow on free creative the educational system, many other riots broke out throughout the country in college campuses.
Students spoke out, they voiced their beliefs about cert essays ireland, what they thought was correct and what wasn’t. College seemed to be a place were educated minds would not only attend to edify themselves, but to edify the world around them. This idea doesn’t come as a shock to those who’ve studied the preceding decades of American culture. The 50’s were a decade of free writing, conservative observation. After World War II, soldiers came back and wanted to form families, thus Baby Boomers, so that the culture was formed mainly around family-friendly topics. Adolescents were much more reserved, and it wasn’t until the era of The Beatles, Blues, and Rock N’ Roll that the next generation broke off and differentiated themselves. In the ensuing decades, Hippies, LSD, and increasing populations of students entering college campuses eager to break off of their parent’s values, changed the cultural landscape, widening their interests and entering into the political arena by speaking out against current issues. Radiography. Hippies brought about free writing, environmental awareness. Graduate Essay. LSD and Rock N’ Roll opened minds creating such popular culture icons as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Beatles, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan and many more who spoke out against discrimination, the Vietnam War, and defended Civil Rights.
As Bob Dylan put it, “The Times, They Are A-Changing.” Indeed they were. Nowadays, students don’t riot anymore. They don’t speak out free writing lessons about issues affecting this and future generations. Students don’t plan mass protests in campuses anymore. The main reason for this is, students have changed.
Demographic charts don’t show the radiography research, same statistics anymore. Anyone can go to college now. When you enter an English 101 classroom in free creative lessons Florida International University, you don’t see only 18-26 year-olds. Career Change Graduate Essay. You see mothers, you see fathers, you see high-school students. Free. You can even catch grandparents in your own class. This is because anyone can go to college now, not because it is more affordable (if that is the history essays northern ireland, case, tuition costs have only increased exponentially), but because education is required for better paying jobs.
In order to free creative writing lessons get into a good college, high school students take Advanced Placement classes in colleges, have dual enrollment in in the water colleges, or conduct research in college institutions. People that already have degrees go back to creative lessons school to have a higher degree in order to earn more money. Older people may apply into the aforementioned category, but may also go back to research papers college because of structural unemployment, that is, their job or trade is no longer marketable. People used to go to college in order to edify themselves, and realize themselves as individuals. Free Writing. College used to change graduate essay be a place of professional discovery. Now, having a high-school diploma gets you a job in McDonalds.
In other words, more than the educational tool that college once was, college is creative writing lessons now thought of as a “Beurocratic Obstacle” in the process of getting a high-or-medium paid job. The other change, is how people view college. Before, college used to be thought of as students in a classroom that take exams to pass the class. Radiography. Degrees can now be pursued online, at anyone’s time expense, and money budget. College has now joined the Internet Era. Creative. Also, due to the increasing amounts of immigrants entering the country to establish better lives, classrooms are now much more diversified throughout the country. This is especially noteworthy in the big cities, the Mecca of the outspoken. Rosenblatt. In the end, interests have changed. Since the 60’s, colleges have come a long way.
The demographic landscape has changed, and so have students’ interests. Though the college experience has changed, as have the cultural and educational values that come with it, college is still a powerful institution in free creative writing lessons which students from all generations continue their studies and research, and in doing so contribute by revising essays, benefiting future generations. Barbies on Wall Street: College for the Students’ Sake. During my first few weeks at Vassar, I was a closeted homosexual who only wore dull, frumpy sweatshirts and never said a word. But after a while, I met an eclectic bunch of people, never went to creative bed before one a.m., and spent a few days venturing out to contemporary art galleries in Manhattan. Research Uk. Now I wear pink sweatshirts and talk quite frequently. So as I read Perlstein’s article, I began to realize how different my experience at Vassar seemed from the creative lessons, dreary, corporatized atmosphere surrounding the University of Chicago, the school where, as a friend of in the water by roger essay, mine once grimly put it, “fun goes to die.” Sure, many of my peers are career-minded and nearly all are academically resolute, yet there is always a childlike blitheness around campus that never ceases to pull us through even the most stressful pre-examination periods. Indeed, as Perlstein notes, the gap between childhood and college has shortened, but not solely in the sense that, because of the Internet, pre-college students now have more information and ideas at creative lessons, their fingertips than ever before. The Essay Friend. Despite this, there is still a very genuine, nostalgic attachment to carefree elementary school days that I have noticed not only in free creative writing Vassar students, but also in my friends at northern, home, many of whom are still eager to revel in classic Disney movies, immerse themselves in the latest Harry Potter book, or, as a friend and I once decided to do, organize a Barbie party.
But what could all this mean? Have university students just become more puerile since the 1960s and 70s? Probably not, if Perlstein’s account of the University of Chicago’s uncreative, humdrum zeitgeist is accurate. But therein lies my major objection to Perlstein’s article: although it implicitly claims to be a barometer of the current collegiate psyche, its lack of free creative lessons, any mention of any other school besides the University of Chicago (save for the brief allusion to career change the heady Berkeley campus of creative, 1966 in change essay the introduction) immediately strips itself of that title. Perlstein tries to acknowledge his expository dilemma at one point in the article: “Is their diagnosis [that life at Chicago is “infantilizing” and “emasculating”] a function of college itself today, or just this college? Hamilton Morris told me stories that suggest the former.” Yet the acknowledgment is ultimately self-defeating if Perlstein does not report on other institutions as well. Free Creative. Besides, I doubt that Hamilton Morris’s “stories” of frustration with school (notably the one in essays which his guidance counselor at Chicago curtly notifies him that he is “not right for college” and should drop out) could really suggest the former if all of them deal specifically with the University of writing lessons, Chicago. Even Morris’s classmate’s declaration that “college sucks anyway, so I might as well stay here,” albeit a broad sentiment, is still too subjective to indicate a mass opinion. In all fairness, however, I certainly cannot label Perlstein as myopic without also acknowledging that my own observations of happy-go-lucky university life are innately blinkered, since I only my best have experience at creative, one institution.
But taking both of our accounts into consideration (and assuming that neither is a completely isolated, atomized instance), something quite telling stems from their contradiction. Campus life may be starkly different between Vassar and Chicago, but Perlstein fails to indicate explicitly that it is the revising, students themselves, whether carefree or careerist, who determine the university scene. Free Creative Writing. It is fine to claim that many Chicago students have become “cogs in the organization,” but there is one blaring fact that Perlstein leaves out here these students are not working so diligently for the organization, but for themselves. Radiography Papers. They may become bleary-eyed and crabby in free writing lessons the process, but at least they’re suffering for their own ends. What we have in the essay my best the modern university student, then, is really an increased self-awareness that is neither necessarily egotistic nor overtly independent. Too often, students receive admonishments for an apparent social and political lethargy that are founded solely on an unnecessary comparison with the more politically active campuses of the 1960s and 70s. In fact, many schools can still boast a heady political scene the old standbys of College Democrats and College Republicans have not gone away, but have been joined by Amnesty International and free writing lessons ACLU chapters, Habitat for Humanity affiliates, and, at least at Vassar, campaigns to stop the evils of the Coca-Cola Company. Career Change Essay. Even though the media might not notice, many of us genuinely care about current affairs.
But that does not mean we have to care if we don’t want to, especially in an environment where more of an creative writing lessons emphasis is placed on the essay about my best friend individual edification than on social activism. No matter how apathetic and unmotivated it may seem, we can still reserve the free creative writing lessons, right to checklist essays unabashed political lethargy. The campus as campaign center, part of the “college experience” that Perlstein describes, may have lost its cultural significance, but college students most certainly have not. The populistic phenomena of creative writing, Facebook, YouTube, and the like, although admittedly distracting, indicate a more active desire in college students to place themselves outside of their university bubbles, if not into the real world, then into the digital one. To post a picture on Facebook or a video on YouTube, regardless of the research papers, content, is to free writing lessons fish out a line of hope that someone will notice it.
Although this may seem like a collective case of dependence anxiety, what it actually reveals is a situation of self-advocacy. On Facebook, for instance, one can add friends, join groups, list interests and activities, post notes, deliver and receive comments in a sense, network one’s specific traits as an checklist online acquaintance. By no means are modern university students detached from the free, world beyond the college gates the Internet still holds the possibility of informing us of the current goings-on, but it also allows us to checklist essays extend ourselves into our own digital personae, mapping out our own spaces on the web. Obviously, we do not go to college to discover ourselves on the Internet. Yet Perlstein’s distinction between college and college, between necessary process and liberating experience, still does not explain why we do. His article implies so much about the contemporary university student’s life the individualization, the effects of the Internet, the shortened childhood-college gap yet it stops short of free creative, a deeper, broader understanding of the situation. In a sense, the “college experience” has not completely gone away it’s just taken on a different form. We might be a little less naive going into college than were previous students, but we still retain an excitement for leaving northern, our future advancement, whether corporate or creative, that we hope will begin if not in school, then because of it.
Both college and free lessons college still remain crucial aspects of modern American life but only if we students get to choose the typeface. Imagine an the essay about alternate 2007, one in creative which John Coltrane is friend still alive, his tenor’s sheets of free creative, sound undiminished despite his advanced age. Imagine that I, only a senior in change essay college, have managed to swindle a perennially-stoned beatnik into surrendering Trane’s cell digits. (To reveal my methods would be to risk incarceration at the hands of the lessons, DEA.) And then imagine that I’ve had every student in my dormitory send him a text message simultaneously, begging him to give us an impromptu recital and to bring McCoy Tyner along, too. But stop imagining. Because not even the strongest suspension of disbelief could withstand this next part, which requires the geriatric saxophonist to fly into Dulles airport and drive south, past Richmond, to career change essay Williamsburg, Va.: home of the College of William #038; Mary, where, no matter how bated our collective breath, an writing A-list jazz musician will never set foot. And it is not our fault; it’s not because our cinder block lounges have acoustics that would make an the man in the aesthete’s ears bleed.
Nor is it because heaps of W#038;M’s students fit David Brook’s “organizational student” mold to a T. Free Lessons. It’s because of what’s beyond our campus walls, a Williamsburg that conflates two of America’s least stimulating backdrops: suburbia and leaving history essays the tourist trap. Yet I continue to free creative love my college, and radiography I try not to think about my imminent graduation. Campuses themselves still smack pleasantly of socialist utopian communities. William #038; Mary is a self-contained world. Free Creative. Everything is within walking distance; people establish identities to correspond with their names; if we try, whole weeks can pass unburdened by commercial transactions, free of buying and selling. Granted, the line between bucolic intellectual bastion and Ivory Tower is a thin one, but we manage, if barely, to stay on the essay about friend the proper side. Nevertheless, Rick Perlstein is partially correct: America’s universities struggle to exempt themselves from a consumer culture that’s arguably more endemic than ever before. Even at William #038; Mary, where more than a few students help put the “liberal” in “liberal arts,” the would-be radicals have more predictable tastes than their moderate counterparts. Nearly all of W#038;M’s hipsters endorse the same political solutions, listen to identical music, wear similar clothing and attend lectures en bloc. The result is a group more homogenous than the mainstream, which is, of free, course, despised for its homogeneity.
Facebook is a testament to career graduate the average undergraduate’s solipsism; we spend enough time gazing at ourselves. Should the rest of the country join in? Mr. Free Writing Lessons. Perlstein decries the lack of on-campus protests, believing that the about my best friend, media would have good reasons to creative lessons pay attention if picket lines were alive and well. W#038;M has its share of protests, but these, too, seem motivated by narcissism. Like movie stars trumpeting the career change essay, causes of Africa, students brandishing anti-X and pro-Y signs are motivated by free lessons, the hope that they will be noticed, not the atrocities they advertise. It’s no wonder Mr. About. Perlstein thinks that no protesters exist: their efforts are in no way conducive to spreading the word. Staring at such types in coffeehouses, it must be easy to shake one’s head and start searching for genuine revolutionaries elsewhere. Writing. But you’re going to have to take my word for it: at college, there’s still plenty going on behind closed doors, and there’s good reason for the doors to stay closed.
We, like Doug Mitchell, will one day be waxing nostalgic about the uncensored, all-night debates in our lounges, even if we aren’t fortunate enough to have Ralph Ellison as a moderator. Many of us are still asking the Big Questions: do we want to live in a country where day-to-day life is characterized by making predictable purchases in uniform environments? How are we to defeat that oft-promulgated corporate lie – money equals happiness – if college becomes nothing more than a prep-school for six-figure careers? Can our urge to educate ourselves and papers others be anything more than elitist, selfish and deluded? Don’t even get me started on the metaphysical and existential dilemmas. Suffice to say, we’re taking nothing at face value, relishing every moment away from our former stomping grounds. It’s probably difficult to believe that a place selling itself as “America’s Hottest Small State School,” a place within walking distance of colonial reenactors playing to masses of free creative writing lessons, fanny-packed families, has actually cast me into Mr.
Perlstein’s dream-world of “cultural and intellectual tumult,” but it has. Colleges might not “look like that” anymore, but Mr. The Man In The Water Essay. Perlstein ought to have learned long before his Chicago days that looks can be deceiving. Manicured quads, diversity statistics, micromanaged extracurricular activities: beneath these vestiges of the free creative, present-day college system there are still students doing actual learning, complete with all of the enlightening and humanizing discoveries connoted by that term. Why, then, are we so reluctant to come out of the woodwork? I think it’s because we’re still learning, sharpening the necessary tools for in the by roger rosenblatt essay, our adult lives.
The individual lust for power is what poisons so much of this country; to seek the spotlight is to seek control, and that’s the opposite of what we want. Free Writing. Our goal is to transcend the problem of authority altogether. We’re patient enough to bide our time, willing to concede that our greatest ideological battles will be waged after graduation, instead of before it. If Mr. Perlstein is graduate essay looking for empirical evidence of our forthcoming brilliance, it’s no surprise that he’s hard-pressed to find it. We haven’t delivered it yet. Because we’re twenty-something perfectionists, and when we change the world, we want to writing lessons be positive that we’ll do it right. Let us keep quiet. Let us bicker amongst ourselves for a year or two more, while we’re still blessedly free of responsibilities. After all, the most subversive figures are never the loudmouths. There’s a difference between precocity and overzealousness.
College matters because enough of us are leaving it with the more materialistic urges of our high school selves finally dying out. Even if the “college experience” is at times infantilizing, much of modern life is, and students know that we must change it. It takes at least four years, but college forces us to face the reality that everyone else is dying to forget: that there is a long term, and that no amount of purchasing power can diffuse its potential bleakness. Forget our propensity to consume. We’re enthralled with our propensity to papers uk revise. At college, in free creative college, from college – pick your favorite preposition – capital-I Idealism still thrives. In our 2007, John Coltrane is deceased, yes, but his music still haunts many an iPod. War protests may lack their Vietnam-era gusto, but Tropic of Capricorn has made the leap from blacklists to syllabi. It’s people like ‘Trane and Henry Miller who inspire us to listen, to read, to prepare.
So please, go right ahead: ignore us while you can. Ignore us while you should. In a few short years, we will not let you. I am about to research prove Rick Perlstein (What’s the Matter with College?) wrong by using a community college, a liberal arts university outside Boston, and an Ivy League institution as my tools. College matters because it is what you make of it. That’s what it has been, that’s what it is, and that’s what it always will be. College, like America, has always included intellectuals, athletes, immigrants, idiots, minorities, artists, loners, losers, corporate robots, counter-culture extremists, creeps, pot smokers, pot dealers, hippies, wanna-be hippies–and a countless number of combinations thereof. I would even argue that college is creative writing lessons becoming more of an about my best friend experience these days, compared to “the” college experience (as though there were only one) of the 1960s and 1970s (herein referred to as “the 1960s” for brevity’s sake). For those of free writing, you who like riddles, figure out how to clothe a basketball coach, a television producer, a talk show host and essays my best friend into the same suit at the same time.

How about free writing, a dancer, choreographer, fraternity brother, career center volunteer, freshman orientation volunteer and history northern ireland member of a marketing team for the Rose Art Museum at writing, Brandeis University? Renaissance men–and women–are back! (The second one was me, by the way.) There has always been a debate between the “well-rounded” and “angular,” but in college we see a rise in their mixture, students who do a lot of things but still manage to do them well. We college students have different skills, but we have different opinions, too. Even within ourselves.
Not only does college allow us to express what we think and feel to our classmates, but it also forces us to question our own assumptions and credos. I consider myself a democrat, but I also consider myself a conservative, and I also consider myself someone whose positions on gun control, immigration and healthcare have changed as recently as two months ago (yes, even before seeing Sicko). Perlstein, implying that this is no longer the case, discusses how students used to debate issues in their dormitory lounge with no regard to time. Sure students did that, but guess what, we still do. I once had a two-hour debate with a fellow lounger about whether or not the term “Jews for free creative lessons, Jesus” is a contradiction. The argument ended only because my opponent needed to finish a final paper. The ideological hybrid that is created within a college atmosphere, and papers even within many of the students themselves, is what makes today’s colleges so… “collegey,” for lack of a better term. Creative Writing Lessons. Like America, college is a melting pot.
And like a melting pot, it’s hot. No Girls Gone Wild stories here, but I can tell you about the time I wore a Milano cookie bag to the “Less-you-wear/Less-you-pay” dance. Then there was the time one of my hallmates took pictures of me, wearing only essays northern a pair of Super Mario Brothers boxers, handcuffed to her door. Has college truly lost its role as society’s institution in which boys become men while–perhaps by–acting very awkwardly? I doubt it. As to why my friend owns handcuffs… suffice it to writing say we shouldn’t judge.
As to the essay about friend why I went along with the plan, let’s remember South Park’s Chef and his sagacious advice: “There’s a time and a place for everything, and it’s college.” I would now like to systematically refute some of Perlstein’s specific claims. “California’s colleges and universities had been instrumental in creative writing lessons turning the nation’s biggest state into the essay about my best friend the world’s fourth biggest economy and an international cultural Mecca.” Any new institution is free creative writing lessons instrumental in helping the state’s economy, and I’m pretty sure California has always been a cultural Mecca…” “…The point I’m trying to make is that the adventure of going to college consisted of a kind of freedom that you couldn’t imagine until you turned 18, you were no longer under adult control, and you made your own schedule…. This is the most liberating moment Americans have in life.” You’re right, it is. It still is.” “The workplace may be more surprising, and maybe even more creative.” OK, but this has also always been the case. Anything new has its exciting points. The Man In The Water Rosenblatt Essay. Careers are usually filled with new and unique opportunities; those who graduated from college 35 years ago, just like those who graduated in 2007, work in very innovative industries, doing things a lot more creative than getting high all day. Also, anything “may be” the case. Ease up on the equivocation. “The kids do have their own war now, but not much of an anti-war movement.” Neither did they back “when college was college”; they only had an anti-draft movement, which would never have been born if it were not for the all-of-a-sudden involuntariness of our nation’s guardians. “It’s unimaginable now that a gubernatorial race in the nation’s largest state would come down to a debate about what was happening on campus.” That’s true, but it’s also unimaginable that that gubernatorial race came down to it.
“‘…so many people hate it with a passion and don’t leave… People here are so insanely uncreative, and they’re proud of it.'” Um, that’s just an opinion, from just one person, at just a single campus, at just this guy’s university, in just his section of the country. Dept. of Education? Yeah, it’s kind of checklist revising, a big deal. And finally, not everyone who went to creative lessons college in the 1960s had the 1960’s college experience. It’s like claiming that everyone during the Vietnam War was a hippie. Leaving History Essays Ireland. It’s simply not true. There was, there is, and there always will be a diversity of free creative lessons, students, mixed not only in terms of their physical and social characteristics, but also by their different varieties of radicalism and the lack thereof. We need not ask, “What’s the matter with college?” The real question is: “What’s the matter with Perlstein?” Ever since I was a young boy my dad loved to tell me stories about the 1960’s.
The more he talked the more I pictured the generation of love as a page in a Dr. Seuss book. He would try his best to the man water explain that people were different then. They were “resonating” as he would put it, or like philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson said much earlier, every heart vibrates to free lessons one iron string. People resonate today. Make no mistake about radiography, it. Free. If any generation is my best capable of intellectual networking it is the Internet generation. But there are definite differences. Not better. Not worse. Just different.

A graduate from business school today would have a significantly more difficult time acquiring that same job even if he graduated with a 4.0 GPA. The Man Water By Roger Essay. Excellent grades and exceptional test results would still have to creative writing lessons be matched with one smooth talking individual if they planned to find gainful employment straight out of school. Having graduated college is not an edge. It’s a standard. While at one time a college degree represented the more affluent elite searching for the essay about my best friend, academic merit, today a college degree suggests safety. Lessons. I started a band when I was ten and by the time I was a senior in high school, numerous record labels approached me about touring the country and the man in the water rosenblatt essay recording a CD for online distribution. Free Creative Writing. My mom said, “go to college, earn a degree, then you can do whatever you want.” In hindsight, she was right. Teenagers in college today are not there because they are particularly smart or interested in engaging higher senses or their intellectual being. Leaving Cert History Northern. They are there because it is the only surefire way to land a six-figure job.
It could best be viewed as a gigantic rat race. Students who are determined to free creative succeed cross the finish line at graduation. If they didn’t feel any one of those three, didn’t feel like broadening their academic horizons, or simply missed mom’s homemade meatloaf, they could leave. Free Creative Lessons. After all, college wasn’t always for everyone. The consequences of walking away were trivial, and at worst, a college dropout would return home to utilize wit, intelligence, good looks, or family connections to history northern ireland find a decent occupation, just like everyone else.
I have one friend my age that isn’t in college. He bought himself a Maserati after he started his own business at the age of 17. He also happens to be a nationally top-ranked chess player. I know that people look down on free lessons him for having left but the truth is that whenever I had the opportunity to speak with him, it was clear that he was a real thinker–a truly gifted child. He left school one day last semester and never returned. When I asked him why he left school he said, “It wasn’t for him.” People love to ask what I’m studying in checklist revising school. Free Creative Writing. Their second favorite question is revising essays whether the party scene ever distracts me from my goal of graduation.
They say, “Do you ever need to step back from the fun and remember why you are there?” They would never have asked that in the 1960’s. College was about the experience, not about drawing boundaries. If you are looking for a home to nurture creative intelligence or spiritual enlightenment, stay away from large colleges and universities. Grow up. Free Creative Writing Lessons. Grab a degree. Don’t look back. What do John Quincy Adams, Bill Clinton, and more than 200,000 American undergraduates last year have in common? They all studied abroad at foreign universities.
Adams mastered French at career change essay, a Paris private school and studied in lessons Dutch at the University of Leiden all before he turned 15! He would go on to be one of the most brilliant diplomats in history essays northern ireland American history, negotiating the end to the War of creative, 1812 with England and papers persuading Spain to cede control of Florida. Not quite as precocious as Adams, Clinton came to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar in writing lessons 1968 at the age of 22. His political opponents have criticized Clinton for playing rugby on papers the lawns of Oxford while other 22 year-olds spilt their blood on the killing fields of Vietnam. And Clinton never earned a degree in his two years of study abroad. Free Writing Lessons. But that’s not to say they weren’t worthwhile.
Clinton learned to see the U.S. from a European vantage-point and his heightened sensitivity to international opinion no doubt helped him assemble the NATO coalitions that stopped genocides in Bosnia and Kosovo. Among American presidents, Adams’ and in the by roger rosenblatt essay Clinton’s study-abroad experiences are rarities. (John F. Kennedy enrolled at the London School of Economics in 1935, but he fell ill with jaundice and writing lessons returned to the U.S. Essays. without having attended any classes.) Adams’ and Clinton’s worldliness stands in especially stark contrast to the pre-presidency provincialism of George W. Bush, whose only free major overseas trip prior to his 40th birthday was a 1975 jaunt to China, where his father was serving as U.S. liaison. But if Adams and Clinton were undergraduates at American universities today, they wouldn’t be the career graduate, only ones with a panoply of passport stamps. According to lessons the Institute of International Education, the number of American undergraduates studying abroad has quadrupled in the last two decades. At several elite universities including Dartmouth, Duke, and Georgetown more than half of undergraduates study abroad during their four years. Goucher College in Maryland now requires that all of its students spend time abroad before they graduate. What does it say about American colleges that they’re encouraging their students in some cases, requiring their students to leave campus?
In the research papers, New York Times Magazine last month, writer Rick Perlstein lamented that “college campuses have lost their centrality.” He wasn’t referring to study-abroad specifically. But it’s true that the study-abroad phenomenon has made the college campus less “central” to creative writing the undergraduate experience. Fifteen years after graduating from the online, University of free lessons, Chicago, Perlstein reflects on his college years, and his most vivid memories come from Sunday neighborhood jazz jam sessions with an ex-Maoist bassist and an ex-beatnik drummer. Fifteen years from now, when I reflect on my college years at the essay about my best, Harvard, my most vivid memories won’t come from campus or anywhere close to free lessons it. Leaving Cert History Essays. They’ll come from the writing lessons, summer I spent trekking through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Russia as a researcher for a Harvard-affiliated travel guidebook. And they’ll come from the friend, two months I spent in Ecuador on a Harvard teaching fellowship. Perlstein’s friend, an creative writing lessons editor named Doug Mitchell, recalls a time when jazz legends like John Coltrane hung out with undergrads at Chicago. When I look back at my college years, I won’t remember any star saxophonists.
I’ll think of the Lithuanian widow who wouldn’t let me leave her house until I had finished off a pile of potato pancakes. I’ll think of the Ecuadorian tuna-factory workers who, once their shifts ended, trudged to my nighttime English class in revising essays a rundown school-building. I wouldn’t trade places with Doug Mitchell for a second. Anyhow, John Coltrane might have been a better saxophonist, but the tuna-factory staff sure could dance salsa. For many undergraduates, study-abroad means missing out creative lessons Sunday neighborhood jazz jam sessions with ex-Maoist bassists at least for a semester. The study-abroad phenomenon also poses a challenge for campus bands, sports teams, and papers online uk clubs. What happens to your jazz band when the bassist decides to spend the spring in Beijing? But while study-abroad might detract (ever-so-slightly) from campus life, Perlstein’s portrait of his alma mater seems unrealistically grim.
One interviewee, a disaffected freshman named Hamilton Morris, tells Perlstein that he’s unhappy at University of Chicago but has no plans to writing lessons leave. “You know: College sucks anyway, so I might as well stay here,” Morris says. In fact, the radiography research, data from free Chicago suggests the opposite. More than a third of Chicago undergraduates study abroad before graduation, and the number is graduate essay growing. Fewer and fewer Chicago students are saying that “I might as well stay here.” In his informal survey of students on free writing lessons the Chicago campus, Perlstein is guilty of what my statistics professors would call “sample selection bias.” If what I’m saying is true that for the “study abroad generation,” the most memorable college experiences come off-campus then it’s no surprise that Perlstein detects a certain malaise within University of Chicago’s gates. If he visited the career change graduate essay, university’s study-abroad outposts in Cape Town and Kyoto, though, the story certainly would be different. Perlstein declares that “college as America used to understand it is coming to an end.” But for hundreds of Chicago students, and for hundreds of thousands of their peers each year, college is now about coming to understand America through the eyes of an outsider. Of course, not all of us will become deft diplomats a la Adams and free creative writing Clinton.
It’s safe to career change graduate essay say that very few participants in study-abroad programs will ever enter politics or government service. But our study-abroad experiences will affect the way we think, the way we live, and the way we vote. After I saw U.S. immigration policy through the eyes of an free creative Ecuadorian architect who had spent years waiting for a visa, I could never look at our entrance quotas the same way again. After I lived in a town whose entire economy was dependent upon water duty-free access to free writing tuna markets in the U.S., I could never see trade policy from the leaving cert history essays, same perspective. More importantly, after living in foreign countries, I cannot think about American actions without considering the way those actions will be perceived abroad. Senator Richard Durbin, D-Ill., who has called on the federal government to increase its support for study-abroad programs, told his colleagues last year: “When you travel overseas, you cannot help but be struck by the fact that people in other countries know so much more about us than we know about them.” The generation emerging from Goucher and writing Georgetown and other institutions today the revising essays, first “study-abroad generation” might be the first in American history to whom Durbin’s statement does not apply.
In our parents’ generation, there was a “presumption that the campus should be a place radically apart from the creative writing lessons, rest of the essay, society its own ‘city state,'” according to Perlstein. Creative Writing Lessons. But the study-abroad generation coming of checklist, age in a post-9/11 world knows that even ivory-covered gates can’t insulate campuses entirely. Members of the study-abroad generation might no longer be denizens of their own campus “city states.” Instead, we’re becoming citizens of the world. Why College Matters: A Psychologic Approach. As a rising sophomore at writing, Yale University I, like many of leaving history essays northern, my friends, cannot wait for the fateful move-in day when I leave my familiar hometown for my home. Though my family and creative (some) friends may be here, I cannot help but feel like a misplaced chess piece on a checkerboard everything is eerily familiar but no one seems to play by my rules any more. Checklist Revising. In some sense, I am torn between two homes a reality that all but fellow college students will understand. Creative Writing. Yet, I am still unabashedly enthusiastic about my school and college in general. After reading Rick Perlstein’s essay What’s the Matter with College? I was viscerally upset.
How could someone question the validity of my experience as a college student? Was my experience, my anticipation, really comparable to that of checklist, my parents or was I merely a cog in Ivy tower of one of the country’s oldest institutions? In short, had the American college experience changed, and how might I have been duped to not notice the sharp shift in orientation from intellectualism to continuity and market-oriented results? After some thought, I reached the conclusion that the college experience had indeed changed, but neither had I been duped. Many things have changed since I went to college, several of which Mr. Free Creative. Perlstein notes, but the history essays northern, most important of which is the writing, change in atmosphere of colleges and in the students themselves.
My Essential Experience. I once wrote, ironically as the first sentence in my college application that for me, finding literature was like finding religion. About My Best Friend. I went on to contend that the term literature, often reserved for stuffy works or critic defined ‘classics’, should apply to all the written word from Milton to Milne. While literature remains my religion, Yale has become my Vatican. I spent the free creative lessons, first year of career graduate essay, my college experience enrolled in a freshman-specific intensive humanities program where all three classes. Literature, Historic and free lessons Political Thought, and Philosophy were taught by reading and essay discussing many of the major written works of the western canon. I loved every second of my reading and, when I wasn’t reading Thucydides or Shakespeare or Kant, I was playing violin in creative writing lessons the marching band, arguing at the Yale Student Roundtable, or cavorting on the man in the water by roger rosenblatt essay stage in /A Funny Thing Happened/. Yet of all these activities, from the happily spirited marching band to free the more relaxed Yale Student Roundtable, my fondest memories of freshman year revolve around the the man water rosenblatt, common room arguments and intellectual throwdowns I frequently participated in with my friends. We would have late night talks about whether free will existed and who would win in a fight ninjas or pirates. (Ninjas, as expertly trained assassins and masters of stealth, would conquer the free, day).
Perhaps I was so upset by Mr. Perlstein’s article because he seems to describe exactly how I have so far experienced college as lost. The Commercialization of essays, College. Begun in 1984 by US News #038; World Report, the numerical rankings of individual colleges have changed college from an creative experience and into a marketable product. If you wonder what I mean consider this turn of phrase, employed jokingly (well, somewhat) on my campus, The only A that matters is the one between the the essay about my best friend, Y and the L. A similar line works for Harvard, and Princetonians need only name drop before getting an interview. However, my friend at the Ole’ Miss Honors College, who work just as hard as I do and is just as smart is accorded no such privilege. Free Writing. This arises from the fact that Yale, Harvard, and Princeton are routinely ranked by career change graduate essay, /US News/ as the top three schools in lessons the country and the University of Mississippi isn’t even given a rank, it is simply listed as third tier. The Stratification of Students. Such a system has drawn out cert northern some distinction among students that, until now, have been hidden by free, social mores and localization. As colleges have become more commercial their actual differences are falling into the shadows. Research Papers. Yalies are quite different from Cantabs (Harvard folk) and proud of it.
One article published by the Crimson asks why that is ( The Cult of Yale ) and the difference seems to be the students. Yale is filled, in my experience, with what I call the college student. Creative Writing Lessons. These studious individuals attend school, with or without a future career goal, for the pleasure of learning. We (I include myself in the man water essay this happy group) are content to argue and debate and study any range of topics we find interesting, whether or not they will be useful in the future. It is this kind of free lessons, student that was most prevalent in the Baby Boom generation because many students were first or second generation college graduates in their families.
Sent on the GI Bill or as a result of a rising prevalence for middle-class children to attend college they had little or no expectations about what they would do after leaving they were the pioneers so they bathed in the light of college intellectualism. This culture continued for nearly two decades (and still continues today), but, as college has become an entrenched, expected part of research papers online uk, American schooling, two other types of students have arisen. The high school student is the most easily recognizable of these new breeds. These people dislike school because they are work oriented. In the past, when it was more acceptable and less damning, these students would have been the free lessons, ones to finish school after getting a high school diploma. Graduate. However, now college seems impossible to avoid so these students attend college and treat it just like high school. Free Lessons. This is not good or bad, but merely means that America’s campuses have seen an increase in checklist essays students who do not seek the intellectual debate Mr. Perlstein associates with the traditional definition of college and instead seek a more fact based, less inquisitorial approach.
The real world student is perhaps the more interesting phenomenon. Now that children are taught to create goals and creative lessons dreams as early as possible, there has arisen an class of students who, although they might enjoy it, will never slow down to actually experience college. Uk. For instance, my friend wants to be a neurosurgeon which requires 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, and a 7 year residency all with top grades. If he really wants to slice open people’s skulls, he must devote himself to specific subjects and forego the exploration I so enjoyed in DS. Where I was able to lap up the humanities and hang out with him in Adv. Freshman Chem, he took only Med school requirements and distributionals. Less Alliteration Bright College Years.
The alma mater of Yale begins with a description Bright College Years with pleasure rife Even as a freshman, I bled Eli blue and can think of no more stirring words than the end of that song ( For God, for Country, and for writing lessons, Yale! ). But the birth of the goal-oriented real world student and the profession/fact-oriented high school student has led me to research realize that college is not all pirates and ninjas. In fact, what I term the Vatican can well be the halls of high school to another or the playbox of upwardly mobile whatevers (doctors, lawyers, astronauts, etc.). However, it is free creative writing because of this diversity that college matters. Without a buffer between life and the real world, it is the college student who misses out the most but so do the high school student, who misses an radiography papers opportunity to free writing lessons get four more years of knowledge necessary for checklist revising, his or her job, and the real world student, who misses the opportunity to creative writing lessons broaden if only slightly his or her interests. Without college, all of us (students that is) would be a little less fulfilled when it finally came time to clock in for our careers. And hey, without college, I might never have a career since I now plan on being a professor having fallen in leaving essays love with my intellectual Sistine Chapel. We are there on campus, somewhere.
Look hard enough and you will find us. You know us well. There we are — walking to class, cell phone in hand, iPod in pocket, conversation in one ear, music in creative writing lessons the other. The conversation ends. The phone goes away. Checklist Revising. And the free creative, other headphone takes its place. We are not every student, but we capture an unsettling type.
We are the ones who cut ourselves off from communication, who isolate ourselves from those around us. The Man In The By Roger Rosenblatt. We are self-creating, self-producing, self-consuming individuals. As we walk to class, we close our ears to the words of creative writing, others and plug into ourselves — into the music we choose and the identities we cobble together for ourselves. We know the unalienable rights the Declaration of Independence recognizes — life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Essay Friend. In college, recognizing we are in firm possession of the first two, we devote our attention and energies to exercising the free writing lessons, third, and research papers online uk we do it on our own.
The reference point is always the self; the writing, guiding principle whatever we think will make us happy; the arbiter of decision our consent and history essays northern choice. We hear the lament often–that we can see outlines of the isolated individuals modernity promised in ourselves and those around us. We who enter lecture halls, pull out our computers, and free spend the hour not engaging with the professor’s arguments but instead immersing ourselves in Facebook, MySpace, ESPN.com and Google News, blinking at the essay about friend, our computer screens, we may not embody Nietzsche’s Last Man, but we do suggest the creative writing lessons, Last Man’s deluded self-satisfaction. Our actions express a belief, perhaps unacknowledged, certainly not self-examined, that we have little to learn from the past and those who lived in leaving cert history essays northern it. Progress alone is writing lessons our teacher. What we perhaps do not recognize is that this idolizing of progress and cert history northern ireland unreflective consent is limiting our minds, our capacity to study the good, and ultimately our ability to live happy lives. The colleges and universities continue to serve a venerable purpose: beyond education, they show where we are heading and what we are leaving behind. The college is the institution where civilization can attempt to creative lessons guard culture from progress-obsessed fashion.
It is in the college that we can take the time to guide human passions towards reason, or at the least a more reflective passion. The fashion of our time is self-discovery, followed by self-expression and self-improvement, and this fashion is founded upon a conviction in the sovereignty of the individual and the primacy of consent as a good in itself. The self-satisfied, deliberately disconnected students on campus signal that fashion is creeping over culture within the colleges and working a misunderstanding of the philosophy of consent. And we, the checklist revising essays, students–and the creative writing lessons, rest of the cert essays ireland, country–should be worried by free creative writing lessons, the foundation upon the essay my best friend which we now build. The individual who chooses to alienate himself from free creative writing society is the logical extension of the career essay, theory of social contract in political philosophy, the theory that tells us legitimacy emerges from consent. Creative Writing Lessons. Social contract theory was founded upon a philosophical myth, the state of nature, which held human beings to be solitary, distrustful creatures not inclined by nature to form communities or engage in politics. Research Papers Online. We know today from science that this view of human nature is false, that we are gregarious, social creatures that come together in communities. We as humans are by creative writing, nature dependent. But the social contract theory remains strong, and the doctrine of legitimacy-by-consent threatens to history essays northern ireland bring about something remarkable.
We students can see among us individuals taking themselves out of society and free creative lessons back to the state of nature. What was a philosophical myth is becoming an unsettling reality. Those of in the water by roger rosenblatt, us who believe that, through the doctrine of the individualized social contract, we are freeing ourselves to bring about a golden age of progress, are in free fact making a tragic, paradoxical error. The Essay My Best Friend. Self-satisfaction is a sign of stagnation. It indicates that we believe we already know what is best for us, without need for further reflection. Progress is not actually possible here. Consent and custom alone cannot answer us when we ask, What is creative writing lessons good?
Consent alone cannot answer why we should consent in the first place, and the philosophy of progress has ironically brought us no further on the question of how we should live. We are in fact more likely to checklist essays be convinced that there is no answer, and that we should just experiment to find what “works” in free writing this new utilitarian state of nature. We see this in college. The tools we thought would bring us happiness leave us in rosenblatt despair and anger, feeling betrayed by the theory’s promise. Creative Writing Lessons. We are left as snakes eating our own tails, forever seeking happiness but destroying the grounds and ignoring the means to pursue it. The self-defined, self-consuming student is troubling because he does not look outside himself in seeking happiness.
What is good becomes good because he affirms that it is good, because he consents to its claim to goodness. If this doctrine of the good continues to grow unchallenged in our minds as we pass through college, our society will begin to see its effects. Radiography. It is difficult to be confident about public consensus of any kind when consent can be withdrawn at any instant when it no longer seems personally satisfying to an individual. College continues to creative lessons matter because it provides a space counter to fashion, where students can slow down and nurture a philosophy of life more robust and checklist revising noble than contract and creative lessons unreflective consent. The college is the final institution that asks us to decide whether we will devote our lives entirely to ourselves or to others as well.
It asks us to consider Solzhenitsyn’s observation that the line between good and evil passes through every human heart, and then asks us to choose where in leaving cert history essays ireland us that line will run. It is when we leave our families, when we feel most like autonomous individuals, that we must be confronted and challenged. When the chances are greatest that our focus will shift to the individual and to unreflective consent, we must reflect on the possibility that there is some external good that we can know and that might guide us in a philosophy of life. The most fundamental learning remains learning to distinguish the good from the free creative lessons, bad. How will we know what to do with our treasured individualism if we do not know towards what we should direct our individual energies? The constitution of a state, since at least the time of Aristotle, has meant more than the research papers online uk, political regime. It also denotes the character of the state, itself inextricably linked to the character of the people. Creative Writing. What a people judges to be good informs all that it does and defines its character.
It is in college that, in the starkest forms, most of us are confronted with the question of the good and civic character. Ignoring the history ireland, question is itself an lessons answer to the question. Our answers will determine the set of futures our world will have. History Essays Northern. How we continue to grapple with this question will determine which future it is. In July, The Magazine published What's the Matter With College, an essay by the historian Rick Perlstein, online and free writing invited college students across the United States to respond.
Some 600 undergraduates did -- many agreeing with Perlstein's assertion that college as America used to understand it is coming to an end, many dismissing his argument as so much nostalgic pap, still others taking the essay, occasion to creative critique higher education from an insider's perch. To continue the conversation, we're featuring the winning student essay and four runners-up, and papers online uk posting another 450 of the entries in a searchable format. Essay: Greek mythology compared to free creative lessons nordic mythology. This paper will outline an exploration between Greek mythology to Nordic mythology, and how similar or different they are from each other. Furthermore it will outline the basic origin of the two mythologies. Each paragraph will cover a specific character or characteristic of the two mythologies and then compared and contrasted between Odin VS zeus, creation it is presented with the relevant concepts defined and radiography papers processes clarified. The Greek mythology compared to Nordic mythology view of creation is provided, wherein key terms are clarified and the mythologies are defined. The aim is to provide an overview of Greek mythology and Nordic mythology perception, upon writing lessons which an understanding of revising essays mythology and their impact and how it is free writing lessons viewed in modern day in pop culture can be clarified. Myths can be looked at in many ways, which often can be employed at the essay my best the same time without contradiction. For example, in the story of Ra, Isis, and the snakebite, the free writing lessons possible political interpretation (Isis being advanced by her priests to position of top god) doesn’t rule out a consideration of Ra as sun-god, or possibly seeing some ritual significance to his sickness and subsequent cure. As G. S. Leaving History! Kirk puts it, “a myth may have different emphases or levels of meaning.” Since it often serves more than one purpose, “a tale about free human actions can contain more than a single aspect and implication” (39).
If we are to compare two different mythologies it is papers uk important that we know exactly what we mean when we write mythology. As we understand it, the word myth was derived from the Greek word “mythos”. In this text the writing lessons word myth is leaving essays northern ireland a story of forgotten or vague origin which is supernatural or religious. A story was made up to explain or rationalize one or more aspects of the creative lessons world. The Man Water By Roger Essay! It is also important to remember that these myths that are given as examples in this document have at free some point been believed to the man in the water be true by the people in the societies that used or originated them.
Therefore it is writing clearly separated from the everyday speech meaning of the word myth, which mostly refers to an imaginary story (Brandenberg, 1994). The Romans copied their mythology from the Greeks; therefore we will only mention the Greek creation myth in this text. Checklist Revising Essays! To be able to explain the differences and similarities between the Norse and the Greek creation myths I’ll begin with a short presentation of the two myths, which both begin with nothing. The world is nothing but a dark and void place (Brandenberg, 1994). In the free writing lessons Greek Creation Myth, in the darkness of the Greek creation myth there is a bird with black wings. This bird is cert ireland making a golden egg from which the God of Love is coming. One of the shells from the free lessons egg becomes the sky, which is also called Uranus, while the other shell becomes the earth, Gaia (Brandenberg, 1994).Later on there is history a fight between the God of Loves child and grandchildren. The child of the God of Love had heard from the Oracle that his son should eat him up so when his son Zeus was a little boy his father instead ate him up(Brandenberg, 1994).Trying to run away from his fate, he is punished and at least Zeus and his brothers win against their father. Zeus has two sons who have one responsibility each.
One of them, Prometheus, should create mankind and the other, Epimetheus, should create the animals. Creative Lessons! They should also give their creations one gift. The animals received one gift each, and by roger rosenblatt essay nothing was left for the human, so Prometheus gave them fire. Because fire was only meant for the Gods, Zeus became angry and had to punish Prometheus and mankind. When Epimetheus married Pandora they were given a lot of creative writing gifts from the other Gods. There was one special gift, called Pandora’s Box, which they were not allowed to open but off course they could not resist the temptation. Opening the box they had suddenly let all the pain, sickness and envy out to the world. There was nothing they could do to stop it. Later on they heard a sound, like “let me out”, from the in the water box. They opened the box one more time and out flew all hope (Brandenberg, 1994). The Norse Creation Myth begins, with nothing but dark chaos.
This nothing, called Ginnungagap, is placed south of Nieflheim, where there is only ice and north of Muspelheim where there is nothing but glowing embers (Greek and Roman 2003). In Ginnungagap the ice from Nieflheim and the parks from free creative writing lessons Muspelheim meet and papers create an evil giant called Ymir. When Ymir is completed the ice and creative writing the sparks also create a cow, which is in the good. Free Creative! The cow feeds the giant Ymir, and itself is licking blocks of checklist essays ice. One day when it is licking a huge ice block the god of Love, Bure, comes out of it. (Greek and Roman 2003) Later on Bures offspring has a struggle against Ymir and the other giants. Creative Lessons! Ymir dies and the gods threw him into Ginnungagap where his flesh becomes the earth, his blood the seas, his bones the mountains and research papers so on. The dwarves and the dark elves in the Norse mythology are created of the maggots from Ymir’s flesh. (Cook, 1914) When some of the gods are walking on a shore they see two tree trunks and give them souls, motions and senses. These become the two first humans, Ask and Embla. (Greek and Roman 2003) In the Norse creation story the world was made from an evil giant (Greek and Roman 2003), while the world in the Greek creation story was made from an egg (Brandenberg, 1994).The Greek people looked at the world in a different way. Maybe they thought the world was more fragile than the Norse people did.
Fighting against nature more than the Greek people did, the Norse people experienced the negative and hard things, like darkness and coldness, in nature. In both stories there was a struggle between a god, who later on would be the ruler of the writing other gods, and someone else. In the Greek creation story, Zeus fought against revising his father (Brandenberg, 1994) while Odin fought against creative writing the giant, Ymir. The ruler of the gods had to show everyone that they were good and brave enough to be the leaders. Then the other gods and the humans could respect and trust them. It is also very interesting to draw parallels to Oedipus and Beowulf (Curtius and the man in the water by roger essay Robert 1963). Beowulf had to give his life to creative writing lessons show his people that he was their right king.
A king could never be afraid of death nor to struggle. Oedipus did not have to struggle physically, but instead he solved a riddle and that way he saved the people. History Ireland! Not solving the riddle he would never have become the king. Lessons! The idea fate was very important for both the Norse and the Greek people, but knowing their fates, they acted in completely different ways. The Greeks always tried to run away from their fate (Curtius and Robert 1963). In the career change essay Greek creation story, one might have noticed that Zeus father ate Zeus so that the fate would not be fulfilled, but you can again draw a parallel to creative writing lessons Oedipus (Curtius and Robert 1963), which is a story based on running away from fates. In Norse mythology they instead prepared themselves to meet fates .The Greek gods punished the people with the opening of Pandora’s Box. Here it is easy to draw a parallel to the Christian religion, which also lets the people live with a sin (Curtius and Robert 1963). In the Norse creation story, there is nothing about punishing or living with a sin.
The Greek people were more often punished because they always ran away from their fates, something that the Norse people never did. Checklist Essays! Instead there is nothing about hope in the Norse creation story, compared to the Greek creation story where a bird flew out of Pandora’s Box with hope (Brandenberg, 1994).When you have been punished you need something to believe in, you need hope. In Norse mythology there are a lot of free creative lessons elves and witches compared to the Greek mythology (Curtius and Robert 1963). Research! What could the reason be? Those imaginations about witches and writing lessons elves are much easier to have when you are living in papers, a cold country with a lot of writing dark forests. Perhaps the Norse people had even more stories and essays thoughts about the free writing elves before the Norse mythology came and when it did come, they involved them in the new mythology/religion. Leaving History Essays! Here one can draw a parallel to the Christening of the Norse people. When Christianity came to the north, the people tried to involve their old rituals in the new religion. It is easier to accept the writing lessons new things if you are allowed to the man in the essay keep the free writing lessons old ones.
To further emphasise that the Greek and Norse mythologies are connected to each other we have also studied some words, which have travelled through languages and the man in the water by roger time. Urd, which means Fate is related to free creative writing lessons the old English word wyrd , which originally meant Fate too. Today we have the word left as the Weird Sisters. First I thought it meant strange sisters, but after research I found out about the real meaning. They are the three sisters of Destiny, which play a big part in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. (Curtius and my best friend Robert 1963) In Greece Odeion was the free writing lessons name of a sort of a construction, which was often used as a theatre. Maybe the Romans used this word too and the Vikings heard it, interpreted it their own way and named their main God with a similar name (Odin). Lots of names may have been travelling around like this. Today the English word odeum means the same thing as the Greek word odeion.
If words have travelled from one place from uk another, the stories and culture might just as well have travelled the same way. Creative Writing! This indicates that Norse mythology could have lots of influence from Greek and Roman mythology. Norse mythology is the religion of the Norse people. The Norse people are the ancient people of northern Europe (Scandinavia, Iceland, Denmark, Northern Germany etc.) (World Book 259).A major difference between Norse mythology and Greek mythology are both cultures views of the afterlife and what happens there. Essays! In Greek mythology there is one allotted place for people to go after death and once they are there they stay there for all eternity. In Norse mythology there are four different places for the dead: Folkvang, Valhalla, Helheim, and free creative writing lessons Ran’s hall or the halls of Ran. Folkvang is the allotted area for your everyday warrior who fought and died and did nothing more.
Valhalla is essays Odin’s hall where 800 of the free bravest warriors go and train for the coming of Ragnarok (literally the ending of the leaving cert history essays northern ireland gods or the end of the world) Helheim is literally the house or home of Hel; Hel is the goddess of the “underworlds” Niflheim (land of free writing fire and heat) and Helheim. Helheim is the essays place where one who didn’t die or in battle goes, those who died from diseases, accidents, old age, etc. Ran is the free lessons goddess of the sea and the drowned. She is said to sink ships and collect the drowned in a net and take them to her hall where they dwell there. In Greek mythology they go to the underworld (or Hades) and they are then separated and checklist revising either got to free Tartarus (hell) or the the essay my best Elysian fields (heaven) (World Book 257). Folkvang, Valhalla, Helheim, and free The Halls of online Ran are four separate areas in the world of Norse mythology where as Hades is one and Tartarus and the Elysian fields are two places within Hades. The Greeks and the Norse, two big groups a long time ago, were very big on myths and used them to explain everything and anything that didn’t make sense. It also so happens that the myths are very similar and reasonably different. So how might these to power house countries myths compare?
First off, the free creative Greeks and the Norse came from totally to different areas and life style (World Book 257) On the Norse side you have all the Northern countries which ranged from a lot of different backgrounds and leaving cert northern the Greeks who at one point were considered the greatest country. The Norse, up north, had a difficult time. They had extreme drops of temperature during the winter with barley any light and a great rise of temperature during the summer. Another thing is that Greeks and the North had a lot of creative lessons basic ideas that were the same. They each had only one ruler of the gods and man, Zeus and Odin, and they each had wives, Hera and Frigg, that had a little less power than their husbands but more than the leaving history other gods.
Each had the creative lessons certain realms such as a god of, war, love, seas/water, and underworld/death. This might not seem like a big thing but if you look at other myths from different groups you will find only one god or creator but the Greeks and the Norse had gods for almost every different realm possible. Another thing you could conclude is research papers uk that these gods kind of creative checked the power of Zeus/ Odin who also would check the power of the gods. The Greek gods were more joyful and happy compared to the dark and gloomy Norse gods (World Book 257) The climate can be the reason for that but it also greatly affected the adventures and radiography papers stories of the gods. With the Greek myths you could see that a lot of them were mainly love stories such as Venus and Adonis, Cupid and Psyche, and the story of Ceres, Proserpina, and Pluto. Even though most these stories don’t end up in a good way you can still tell by reading them that the creative writing personality was more playful compared to the Norse gods. The Norse myths were more about battle and struggle with usually an end result of checklist death such as the story of the Death of Blader or the stories of the two heroes Beowulf and Siegfried. Both Greeks and Norse seemed to free creative lessons have the same idea of fate being important as it can be related to many of both their myths. The Norse called the gods of faith Norns and the Greeks used the now day word fate or Fates (World Book 257) both groups had three of the man by roger essay these gods, they were females, and they both of course served the same purpose. One sets out the string of life, another decides the length and creative writing decides what is to happen to this person and the third cuts it off or ends it, which in simple form can be said as one sets the past, another the present, and the third the future. it seems that the Fates and Norns were more superior then the gods themselves even though they fall into a different realm then the in the water by roger rosenblatt gods which truly shows how important these fates or this idea of fate was to the Greeks and Northen people (World Book 257) As you can see both the Greeks and Norse believed that their lives are predetermined and they can’t really do much about it.
The creation of the two stories is also slightly related. The Norse believed that the world was once frozen over and after years Ymir was born and Ymir was one of the first giants who was later killed by his grandchildren while the Greeks believed the free writing lessons world was formed from chaos were Gaea (mother earth) and research online uk Uranus (the heavens), were created. You can draw out from both stories that the creation of the gods and creative writing lessons world was a struggle and not a very good place until these superior gods came in power. This idea really shows how much honor both gods had from their people. In each creation story a god raised up to fight the current ruler which was usually. In the Greeks creation Cronus killed Uranus, who later followed the same fate as Uranus, and was killed by Zeus and in the Norse myths Odin fought against Ymir the giant whose body created the earth and heavens.
The rulers of both stories can be viewed as brave and powerful because they both had to overthrow the last ruling god. Even with all the career essay other gods it seems that no one comes close to the power that Zeus and Odin held. All in all the great Greek myths and the Norse myths are very similar in free lessons, basic concepts and the essay friend structure. A lot of other groups used myths but nothing can compare to the Greek and Norse myths with their great meaning and reason for everything. Both sides are alike from the creation to the same power structure to the belief have having a preset faith. The only free writing lessons real difference is the mind set and personality of the stories which can be explained to the major difference of climate between these two countries.
Why might they be so similar? Was it that the same idea passed from Greek to the man essay Roman up north or was it just similar thinking, who knows. Free Lessons! Only one thing is certain and that is that the Greek and papers uk Norse myths are very much alike. While the individual stories of the gods and heroes differ, there are a lot of similarities between the two. Both are polytheistic mythologies – they have multiple gods. Often the god can be seen affecting the lessons earth through some natural phenomenon. For example, Zeus in Greek mythology and Thor in Norse both had a connection to lightning. Gods were often patrons of different trades or types of people. Both Demeter (Greek) and radiography research Skadi (Norse) were connected to the harvest. The greatest difference is in the end of the gods. In Greek mythology there is creative writing no apocalypse – no end of the world.
The gods will always be on Mount Olympus, ruling over the earth. Papers Online! Norse mythology, in contrast, had a definitive end of the world Ragnarok when great heroes of the past would return from the dead to do battle. During Ragnarok, it was said that the free creative lessons gods were fated to die – many of the “top” gods would die in battle with the greatest enemies and creatures of the career graduate essay mythology. Hundreds of years ago people did not have the technology to explain different forces of nature. Free Creative Lessons! They created gods, each with separate powers, to rule their domains. Some of the gods were merciful, some were wicked, and others were merely servants of more powerful gods. Looking at papers uk the gods, it is easy to tell what the civilization most valued.
I am going to look at the Greek and the Norse gods to compare what was most important to their societies. Both cultures had a king of the gods. In Greek mythology there is no god who is more powerful than Zeus. He is the free creative writing youngest son of Cronus and Rhea, ruler of the Titans. Cronus was told that one of his children would overthrow him, taking control of his kingdom. To be sure this would not happen; Cronus swallowed his first five children: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and change graduate Poseidon. Free Writing Lessons! Rhea could not bear to see another one of her children, devoured so she replaced Zeus with a rock wrapped in water by roger rosenblatt essay, swaddling. Cronus, thinking he ate Zeus, left Rhea time to leave Zeus in a cave where he was raised by a divine goat, Amaltheia (pantheon/odin). After Zeus was grown he went back to Cronus with the help of Gaia and Metis, who made an elixir to cause Cronus to vomit his brothers and creative lessons sisters.
Zeus then led the fights against the Titan dynasty. Afterwards they banished the Titans to Tartarus, the lowest place on earth, even lower than the underworld. Zeus and his brothers then drew straws to find who would rule where. Friend! Zeus gained rule of the sky, Poseidon ruled the seas, and Hades ruled the underworld (pantheon/odin). Zeus is the god of law, justice, morals, thunder, lightning, and rain. It was his job to oversee and make sure laws were being kept. Free Creative Writing Lessons! He was worshipped originally as a weather god.
He was depicted as a middle-aged man with a youthful appearance; he was regale and was almost always shown ready to throw a lightning bolt (pantheon/zeus). The large part of today’s spiritual and intellectual ideas is the the essay friend result of combining Greek and Norse mythology. Upon comparison of common beliefs held today and those from the days of old, surprising similarities can be found. The fact that these two sets of beliefs were combined is extraordinary, taking into account the fact that Greek ideas are almost completely opposite when compared with Norse concepts. Creative! Greek mythology was created to radiography escape the horrors found in a barbaric world, and is therefore blissful and dreamy. Lessons! Norse mythology, by contrast, is gloomy and full of impending doom. Change Essay! Although a few similarities can be found, the stark contrast between Greek and Norse mythology is much more obvious. The creation story, as told by Greek mythology, is free writing lessons very different to the Norse creation. In Greek mythology, the gods did not create the universe; rather they were created by the universe. The Essay About My Best! The first descendants of Chaos were Night, Day, Heaven, and Earth.
The gods were then descendants of Mother Earth and Father Heaven. Writing Lessons! As a direct contrast, in Norse mythology, the research papers gods were responsible for building the universe. In the Elder Edda, it is stated that, “of old there was nothing.” Giants were the first creatures created, and the gods were descendants of the first giant, Ymir. The gods then in turn slew Ymir and made the free writing lessons earth, sky, and revising heaven from his body. The Norse heaven, Asgard, is free creative writing lessons based on a completely different ideology than where the Greek gods dwelt, Mount Olympus.
There is no joy or bliss in Asgard, merely a dismal sense of doom. Essays! Accompanied with Asgard is the unceasing threat of inevitable and complete destruction. The gods who inhabit Asgard know that one day Asgard will eventually be completely inebriated. Creative Writing! Mount Olympus, by contrast, is a place full of merriment and carefree celebration. The gods spend their time drinking ambrosia and toying with the the man by roger rosenblatt forces of creative writing lessons nature. Research Papers Online Uk! Their every action is for their own joy and delight, not necessarily for free creative writing lessons, the benefit of mankind. Never does any thought of devastation or doom cross their minds, for the gods of Mount Olympus cannot be brought down. Another distinction between Greek and about Norse mythology is seen in the attitudes of their gods. The Greek gods are immortal and indestructible while the free writing lessons Norse gods know they will be defeated and annihilated by evil forces. The Greek gods are assured victory in online, any battle, and cannot be considered heroic for this very reason.
Every Olympian is immortal and invincible; they go into a battle sure of creative lessons their victory and fearing nothing. Career Graduate Essay! A drawback to this great advantage is that the Greek gods never know the exhilaration in creative, overcoming astounding odds, or the online adrenaline that comes from free creative writing lessons confronting danger. The Norse gods are well accustomed to this type of online uk stimulation, for they exist with the knowledge that they will one day be defeated. Lessons! In the end, when the the essay my best forces of good and evil fight the final battle, evil will succeed over the Norse gods. There is nothing the gods can do to prevent their fate.
The gods do not give up, but will put up a strong fight until the very end. In all cultures, a hero is one who closely resembles the gods; therefore Norse heroes are always destined for doom, but face their fate fearlessly. Norse heroes confront disaster, knowing they cannot escape through heroic deeds. The Norsemen felt that the ultimate proof of a hero is continuing to resist while facing certain death. In this manner, the hero dies undefeated, for he did not let even death falter his courage. Signy, a Norse heroine, embodies these ideas.
She dies along with her enemy after getting revenge for her family’s death. Her heroic death is more of a triumph than avenging the wrong done to her. Mark Twain stated that, “Courage is resistance to free creative fear, mastery of fear not absence of fear.” The Norse idea of a hero embraces this idea, but the Greek notion of leaving northern ireland a hero opposes it. Contrasting to the Norse heroes, Greek heroes are fierce warriors who seem unconquerable. As Norse heroes are like Norse gods, so are Greek heroes like Greek gods in that they appear invincible. They slay monsters left and right, avenge those who have been wronged, and overcome all odds. The true test of a Greek hero is found in his strength, courage, or lack of fear, and brave deeds.
Hercules, the quintessential Greek hero, was the most loved and most famed of free all heroes in research papers, Greek culture. Free! The son of by roger essay a mortal woman and Zeus, Hercules is half god and half human. Oftentimes appearing godlike himself, Hercules possesses an incredible amount of strength, and fears nothing. His innumerable counts of bravery even include aiding the gods in conquering the Giants. A major difference between Greek and Norse mythology can be found in the personalities of Zeus and Odin. The Greek Zeus is Lord of the Sky and creative writing lessons ruler over all the other gods. He is a powerful god with the revising essays ability to induce fear, but also, “a capital figure of fun.” Zeus is creative writing supposed to have upheld the standards of right and wrong, but this is not always a very high standard.
He entertains numerous affairs with mortal women and delights in causing trouble for cert, mankind. Zeus is often pictured as amorous, joyful, and comic. Odin, Zeus’ Norse counterpart, is also the free creative writing lessons sky father and ruler of the other Norse gods. Other than their similar roles in mythology, Zeus and Odin could not be more opposite. Odin is always described as being strange, solemn, and the man in the water by roger detached, a probable result of his constant grapple with threatening doom. While Zeus spends his time frolicking with other women, Odin seeks as much knowledge as possible, often gained only writing lessons through physical trials. He alone bears the brunt of the the essay about my best friend responsibility for delaying as long as possible the day of complete destruction. The chasm between Greek and free creative writing lessons Norse mythology is huge. Norse mythology is full of despair, sacrifice, and desolation, creating a dark and in the by roger gloomy portrayal of Norse culture.
The only bright spot in writing lessons, Norse mythology is remarkable heroism, which is characteristically marked by cert essays ireland the death of the protagonist. Greek mythology contains stories of great victories over evil, love, adventure, and a carefree life. The hero inevitably wins and mankind is always celebrated. It seems impossible that the two could become one, but as different as they are, Greek and Norse mythology have combined to writing lessons form the culture of the modern world. The Norms exist in the Norse mythology as the three creatures that determine Fate. Before they came to Asgard time did not exist. Because of this, one can say that the water Norms are above the gods in such meaning that the gods cannot stop the writing lessons Norms from doing their job, which is to create time. Without time one cannot determine Fate, because then you don’t know when the events are going to history ireland take place or in which order. The Norms visit each being, human or god, immediately after they are borne to free creative lessons determine his or her future. Even though some stories say that there are many Norns, there are usually three mentioned; Urd (past), Skuld (present) and Verdandi (future).
These creatures live by the first root of Yggdrasil (the world tree) next to a well, which is known as the Well of the essay Fate. Every morning they come out of the cave they spend their night in, then scoop up water and mix it with the sand around the tree to create magic dough. They spread it on Yggdrasil to prevent it from become rotten and free creative writing lessons preserve the the man rosenblatt essay life spirit of the tree (Kirk, 1974). The Fates of Greek mythology are also known as the free creative lessons Moirae or Apparotioners. These three females decide how long every individual is going to live. They were sometimes considered superior to the gods. They were called Clotho (the Spinner), Lachesis (the Drawer of Fates) and Atropos (Inevitable). Clotho comes to by roger rosenblatt essay the newborn and spins out the thread of life, Lachesis measures it and decides what is going to free writing lessons happen to this being and Atropos cuts it off. (Kirk, 1974).There is a verse about them to change graduate remember what they did: Clotho colum retinet, Lachesis net, et Atropos occat, which means Clotho holds the free creative lessons spinning wheel, Lachesis spins and by roger Atropos cuts it off. (B3) They are often imagined sitting around a cauldron or a spinning wheel. (Kirk, 1974).In both sets of mythologies the creatures that determine Fate are identical in purpose, gender and number.
They are both above the gods and their jobs are inevitable for everyone. Free Creative Writing Lessons! No one can go against the Fates. There are several Greek stories, which tell about the tragedy of the essay persons who try to overcome their fate (e.g. Oedipus). In Norse mythology Odin himself learns about his fate (being killed during Ragnar??k, the doomsday, by the wolf Fenris) from the Norms, and there is nothing he can do about it but prepare himself and creative lessons his allies.
Both the Norms and the Fates were thought as sitting around something circular, this may represent the circle of life, which is not exclusive to these myths. If we consider the mythologies as a reflection of the society, the conclusion is that both the Greeks and research online Vikings believed that their lives were already decided and one can only follow his/hers fate. This maybe made it easier for people to live, as no matter what they did it was already predicted. As written, the creative writing lessons power of the Weird Sisters was inevitable for everyone (Kirk, 1974). The Greek and Roman Mythologies have fascinated human beings for centuries, inspiring books, movies, research, and conversation among those who want to learn more and who want to in the water essay share the creative writing fables of the Gods and Goddesses. Their stories (myths or mythos, depending on the origin), their triumphs and failures, and their imminent Immortality has been the influence of many other religions, including Paganism and Norse Mythology. Unfortunately, many people do not know the differences between Greek and Roman mythology, assuming that the two are interchangeable at will. In reality, the two are very different from one another, and capture almost opposing life values that are central to radiography research the people of the time.
Greek and Roman gods were not worshipped, as the Christian God is, but rather used as a model for how mortal humans should and should not behave. The Greeks came first, some 1,000 years before the free writing lessons Romans. Their most appreciated work, the Iliad, was distributed 700 years before the Roman’s most popular manuscript, the Aeneid. The Iliad was based on at least 300 years of myths and stories, which were gathered from the tales passed down by mortal observant, which certainly correlates with the research papers online uk Christian Bible. Writing! It was not meant as a holy scripture, however, but as a recorded history of the Greek Gods and Goddesses, who were revered by the essay about my best men during that time. The Greeks were focused primarily on life on earth, versus the free creative eventuality of the afterlife.
They believed that a man’s worth was determined by his actions during his life, and research that his true immortality was in writing, the remembrance of his gifts to the world. Checklist Revising Essays! His traits, his personality, and writing his interaction with other people spoke for his self-worth. The Man Water! Gods and Goddesses were based on human personality traits – such as Love, Honor, Dignity, and Hatred – and their actions in free, myths were symbolic of the actions of men. Many myths involved a mortal or a deity snatching something back from the Underworld, which illustrated their belief that the afterlife was not of any concern, and research online uk that it was the pysical world that was important. Poets, artists, and those who gave themselves to creative pursuits were well-honored by the Greeks. They held creativity above physical works in the mortal and mythical world; myths reflected those personal traits and were meant to expose the free writing lessons positive and negative aspects of humanity.
Deities were important to the progression of life, but mortal heros were just as sacred, for it was their contributions to society that mattered in the end. Individualism was also very important; the checklist essays actions of a group were not as consequential as the actions of an individual. Men were responsible for their own well-being, and could not be bothered by creative writing lessons the mistakes of the masses. Romans, on the other hand, were far more disciplined than the essays Greeks, and focused on actions rather than words. Whereas the Greeks revered the poet, the Romans held up the warrior as the epitome of sanctity, and rewarded bravery and risks taken by both mortals and free creative deities. They strongly felt that good deeds on earth would be well-received in Heaven, and they strove to checklist revising earn their place among the Gods in the afterlife. In fact, they believed that if one performed well enough in life, that they would transcend to Gods after death.
The Romans adopted many of the myths and deities of the Greeks, though they changed names and writing lessons circumstances to support their own beliefs. For example, the Roman Gods were not individualistic, as were the Greek Gods, and were named after objects and actions rather than human characteristics. Myths were rooted in the brave, heroic acts of the by roger rosenblatt essay Gods, and rarely displayed the lives of mortals, because mortal life was not as important as that after death. Also, Roman Gods and free creative lessons Goddesses were often not gender-specific, since their individual characteristics were not central to their actions. Roman and Greek Mythologies are decidedly different, though they are rooted in graduate essay, similar histories. A study of their individual characteristics illustrates the values and beliefs of the Greeks and Romans respectively, and can offer a better understanding of how these myths and anecdotes originally came about. In Western culture there are a number of literary or narrative genres that scholars have related in different ways to myths. Examples are fables, fairy tales, folktales, sagas, epics, legends, and etiologic tales (which refer to causes or explain why a thing is the way it is). Another form of tale, the parable, differs from myth in its purpose and character.
Even in creative, the West, however, there is no agreed definition of any of the man water these genres and some scholars question whether multiplying categories of narrative is helpful at all, as opposed to creative working with a very general concept such as the traditional tale. Non-Western cultures apply classifications that are different both from the papers Western categories and from one another. Most, however, make a basic distinction between “true” and “fictitious” narratives, with “true” ones corresponding to what in the West would be called myths. If it is accepted that the category of traditional tale should be subdivided, one way of doing so is to regard the various subdivisions as comparable to bands of color in a spectrum. Within this figurative spectrum, there will be similarities and analogies between myth and folktale or between myth and legend or between fairy tale and folktale. In the section that follows, it is assumed that useful distinctions can be drawn between different categories. It should, however, be remembered throughout that these classifications are far from rigid and that, in many cases, a given tale might be plausibly assigned to free creative more than one category. Papers! The importance of studying myth to provide a key to free creative lessons a human society is a matter of historical record. In the middle of the 19th century, for about my best friend, instance, a newly appointed British governor of New Zealand, Sir George Grey, was confronted by free lessons the problem of how to come to terms with the Maori, who were hostile to the essay about my best the British.
He learned their language, but that proved insufficient for an understanding of the way in which they reasoned and argued. In order to be able to conduct negotiations satisfactorily, he found it necessary to study the Maori’s mythology, to which they made frequent reference. Other government officials and Christian missionaries of the 19th and 20th centuries made similar efforts to understand the mythologies of nations or tribes so as to facilitate communication. Such studies were more than a means to an end, whether efficient administration or conversion; they amounted to the discovery that myths present a model or charter for man’s behavior and that the free world of myth provides guidance for crucial elements in the man in the by roger rosenblatt, human existence–war and peace, life and death, truth and falsehood, good and evil. In addition to such practically motivated attempts to understand myth, theorists and scholars from many disciplines have interested themselves in the study of the subject. A close study of myth has developed in free writing lessons, the West, especially since the 18th century. Much of essays its material has come from the study of the Greek and Roman classics, from which it has also derived some of its methods of interpretation. Creative! The growth of checklist essays philosophy in ancient Greece furthered allegorical interpretations of myth–i.e., finding other or supposedly deeper meanings hidden below the surface of mythical texts. Such meanings were usually seen as involving natural phenomena or human values. Related to this was a tendency toward rationalism, especially when those who studied myths employed false etymologies. Rationalism in free writing, this context connotes the scrutiny of myths in such a way as to make sense of the statements contained in them without taking literally their references to gods, monsters, or the supernatural.
Thus, the ancient writer Palaiphatos interpreted the story of checklist revising Europa (carried off to Crete on the back of a handsome bull, which was actually Zeus in disguise) as that of a woman abducted by a Cretan called Tauros, the free creative writing lessons Greek word for bull; and Skylla, the bestial and cannibalistic creature who attacked Odysseus’ ship according to Homer’s Odyssey, was by the same process of research papers online rationalizing interpreted as simply the name of a pirate ship. Of special and long-lasting influence in free creative lessons, the history of the interpretation of essays myth was Euhemerism (named after Euhemerus, a Greek writer who flourished about 300 BC), according to which certain gods were originally great people venerated because of their benefactions to mankind. The early Church Fathers adopted an attitude of creative writing modified Euhemerism, according to which classical mythology was to be explained in terms of mere men who had been raised to superhuman, demonic status because of their deeds. By this means, Christians were able to incorporate myths from the culturally authoritative pagan past into a Christian framework while defusing their religious significance–the gods became ordinary humans. The Middle Ages did not develop new theoretical perspectives on myth, nor, despite some elaborate works of historical and etymological erudition, did the Renaissance. Career Change! In both periods, interpretations in creative, terms of allegory and Euhemerism tended to predominate. About 1800 the Romantics’ growing fascination with language, the postulation of an research papers uk, Indo-European language family, the study of Sanskrit, and the growth of writing lessons comparative studies, especially in history and philology, were all part of a trend that included the study of myth. The relevance of Indo-European studies to an understanding of Greek and Roman mythology was carried to an extreme in the work of Friedrich Max Muller, a German Orientalist who moved to Britain and cert essays northern ireland undertook important research on comparative linguistics. In his view, expressed in such works as Comparative Mythology (1856), the mythology of the original Indo-European peoples had consisted of allegorical stories about the workings of nature, in particular such features as the sky, the Sun, and the dawn. In the course of time, though, these original meanings had been lost (through, in Muller’s notorious phrasing, a “disease of language”), so that the myths no longer told in a “rationally intelligible” way of lessons phenomena in revising, the natural world but instead appeared to writing lessons describe the “irrational” activities of radiography papers gods, heroes, nymphs, and others. For instance, one Greek myth related the pursuit of the nymph Daphne by the god Phoebus Apollo.
Since–in Muller’s interpretation of the evidence of comparative linguistics–“Daphne” originally meant “dawn,” and “Phoibos” meant “morning sun,” the original story was rationally intelligible as “the dawn is put to creative flight by the morning sun.” One of the problems with this view is, of course, that it fails to account for the fact that the papers Greeks continued to tell this and similar stories long after their supposed meanings had been forgotten; and they did so, moreover, in the manifest belief that the free stories referred, not to nature, but precisely to gods, heroes, and other mythical beings. Interest in myth was greatly stimulated in Germany by Friedrich von Schelling’s philosophy of mythology, which argued that myth was a form of in the by roger essay expression, characteristic of a particular stage in human development, through which men imagine the Absolute (for Schelling an creative, all-embracing unity in which all differences are reconciled). Scholarly interest in change graduate essay, myth has continued into the 20th century. Many scholars have adopted a psychological approach because of interest aroused by the theories of lessons Sigmund Freud. Subsequently, new approaches in papers online, sociology and anthropology have continued to encourage the study of myth. In the industrialized Western society of the 20th century, myths and related types of tales continue to be told.
Urban folklorists collect stories that have much in common with the tales collected by the Grimm brothers, except that in the modern narratives the lone traveler is likely to free writing be threatened, not by a werewolf, but by a phantom hitchhiker, and the location of his danger may be a freeway rather than a forest. Computer games use sophisticated technology to the essay about represent quests involving dragons to be slain and princesses to be saved and married. Writing Lessons! The myth of change graduate essay Superman, the superhuman hero who saves the writing lessons world and preserves “the American way,” is a notable image embodying modern Americans’ confidence in the moral values that their culture espouses. The Man In The Water By Roger Rosenblatt Essay! Not dissimilar are myths about the early pioneers in the American Wild West, as retold in countless motion pictures. Such stories often reinforce stereotypical attitudes about the writing moral superiority of the settlers to the native Indians, although sometimes such attitudes are called into question in other movies that attempt to demythologize the Wild West. A particular illustration of the power that myths continue to exert was provided as late as the 1940s by the belief in the existence of an Aryan racial group, separate from and superior to the Semitic group. This myth was based in part on about friend, the assumption that peoples whose languages are related are also related racially.
The fact that this assumption is spurious did not prevent the free lessons Aryan myth from gaining wide acceptance in Europe from the 18th century onward, and it was eventually to provide a supposed intellectual justification for the persecution of the Semitic Jews by their Aryan Germanic “superiors” during the period of Nazi domination. Checklist Essays! This episode suggests that, in politics, a myth will take hold if it serves the interests and focuses the aspirations of a particular group; the truth or falsity of the myth is irrelevant. In a sense, of course, this function is merely an extension of its more general role in religion, where a myth, as well as addressing questions such as a society’s place in the cosmos, may serve to justify a particular kind of governmental organization. In conclusion, if we think of myths as true, if we believe in free creative, them, then obviously, we are thinking in religious terms. But belief is also psychological: some say humans need to believe in some power greater than them. Others, like Joseph Campbell, see the origins of myth and religion in the psychological response of early man to the trauma of research online uk death. Thus, belief in a greater power arises when humans are faced with the mystery of what happens after death. The earliest efforts to rationalize myth by free lessons seeing it as disguised history, as disguised philosophy, or as fables illustrating moral truths all proceeded from the essay about my best friend a desire to make the free writing lessons seemingly irrational and immoral actions of career graduate essay gods and men appear rational and moral.
Thus, bizarre or grotesque elements in the stories could be rationalized as disguised history, philosophy, or morality. However, these early rationalizes often ignored elements of the myths which did not fit into their allegorical schemes and free creative writing made little attempt to look at myths psychologically or symbolically, or to leaving history northern place the them in their proper historical context. (The “history” of free writing these early “euhemerizers” was often mere wishful thinking, as when they saw Zeus as a tribal hero who had been deified.) But myths do embody historical, philosophical, and moral elements; we must search for them more carefully than early mythologists did. Students should remember, however, that the symbolic, religious, ritual, or magical explanations that myths offer may differ from modern scientific or historical explanations. Something as great as God may be quite difficult for limited human minds to comprehend, Joseph Campbell says we can only know God through stories and symbols, or myth. But our stories are human and limited, and thus cannot, according to Campbell, tell literal truths, but all can and the essay about my best do tell metaphoric and symbolic truths. Ritual is another way in which humans attempt to embody or even call upon the unknown. Ritual patterns may reappear in myths and mythic motifs may be reflected in rituals (Hero 381). But there is no easy rule for tracing the influence of ritual on myth or vice-versa. Mythologists continue to argue whether the repetitive patterns of motifs and plot seen in many myths stem from ritual patterns (Hero 381), or from psychological archetypes inherent in free creative writing lessons, humans, or from the repetition common in oral forms of storytelling (Hero 381). No one way offers a key to the interpretation of essays myths, but all can offer insights to different motifs and plot elements. When interpreting myths, students should remember Campbell’s wise advice: “There is no final system for the interpretation of myths, and there never will be any such thing” (Hero 381).
This may sound like a cheerless sentence, but cheer up: there may be no foolproof system, but there are ways to trap the truth in myths. Creative Writing! According to Campbell, myths are like the god Proteus (sometimes called the my best friend Old Man of the Sea) in free creative writing lessons, the Odyssey who “always speaks the truth” (Homer 52, my emphasis). Change Essay! But first you must catch him and hold onto free creative him, which isn’t easy because he constantly changes shapes in order to get away. “He will turn into all sorts of shapes to try you, into all the creatures of that live and move upon the earth, into water, into blazing fire; but you must hold him fast and research uk press him all the harder” (Homer 53). Great advice for any student of myth! Hold onto that story, no matter how much it changes or how weird it seems, and eventually it will calm down and answer your questions.
But Proteus only answers the specific questions put to him. So, to free creative get good answers, you have to ask a lot of different questions. The coasts of the Gulf of Mexico are the checklist best place for seabirds€™ nests and turtles€™ nesting. However, the most valuable treasure for free creative writing lessons, economic development of the in the water rosenblatt essay country is the richest reserve of oil and natural gas.
In general, there are more than 4,000 offshore rigs in the Gulf of Mexico designed for drilling gas and oil (Chiang et al., 2010). According to researchers, €śmany people who live in the five U.S. states that border the Gulf of Mexico (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida) depend on lessons the Gulf for jobs and survival€ť(Chiang et al., 2010, p. 5). One more important function of the Gulf of Mexico is the growing fishing industry that provides over the essay my best, 1.3 pounds of fish and shellfish each year. This information helps to better understand the negative consequences of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that occurred on April 20, 2010. The negative effects from oil spill have been widely discussed in free creative lessons scientific literature. Uk! These effects include species-specific effects, effects on the near shore environment, serious trophic effects through oil contamination of sediments, various site-specific effects, and lessons the effects on drilling discharges (Lin Mendelssohn, 2012). Radiography Research! Based on recent research findings, €śthe BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that followed the explosion of the exploration platform Deepwater Horizon on 20 April 2010 was the largest accidental oil spill€ť in America that requires finding the writing proper solutions to research papers develop effective risk management practices. Creative Lessons! It is graduate very important to find out €śif an accident of this size could have been expected€ť (Acton, 2013, p. 501).
The general aims of the analysis presented in this paper include: providing an creative overview of the key facts surrounding the case identification of the about my best major risk management issues identified in the case Comparing and contrast the way in which these three risk management issues were dealt with by the firm(s) involved with material presented in the course or other reference material dealing with the concepts or issues that the case illustrates Assessment of the effectiveness with which the crisis, created as a result of the failures in risk management evident in the case, were managed Identification of the free lessons lessons that can be learned from the case, providing conclusions and the nature of any control procedures and/or risk treatment systems that should have been implemented or where failures occurred. This report is significant for assessment of the revising essays key risk management issues that are associated with the free creative writing lessons oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The BP€™s handling of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred in 2010 teaches people some important crisis management lessons. Leaving Cert History Essays Northern! Actually, the work on oil platforms is automated, but human errors often occur on these structures (Smithsona Venette, 2013). According to researchers, these oil drilling rigs are considered to be the largest movable human-made structures in the world, as such €śthey have become virtual cities afloat that will always have minor equipment failure and human error, not to mention working in hurricane-prone environments€ť (Ostrom Wilhelmsen, 2012, p. 23).
The Deepwater Horizon platform is no exception, as it has a long history of oil spillages and fires that occurred before the oil spillage of 2010. The Deepwater platform operates day and night; therefore, some problems with equipment may appear on a regular basis. Free Creative Writing Lessons! This report is water rosenblatt essay aimed at giving explanation of some important risk management practices that should be taken into consideration by other companies to avoid negative consequences, similar to the Deepwater Horizon platform€™s disaster. Case Study Description of the key facts surrounding the case. The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is considered to be the €ślargest accidental marine oil spill in the history of petroleum industry, being 8%-31% larger in volume that the previous largest oil spill, the Ixtos I oil spill€ť (Holland Schemwell, 2014, p. 23). The BP oil disaster is often called the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. It occurred on 20 April 2010 in the Gulf of free creative writing Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. Actually, the BP oil spill can be viewed as the worst environmental disaster in America. The BP oil spill occurred near Mississippi River Delta, as a result of a deep-sea floor oil gusher, which was made by the massive explosion of the Deepwater Horizon platform, one of the friend most efficient and effective semi-submersible drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.
It has been found that oil slick coverage was approximately 2,500 square miles in the Gulf of Mexico region. It has been reported that there were huge underwater oil plumes invisible at the surface. As a result of the massive explosion, there were many victims of free writing this disaster; including 11 workers killed during the explosion and 17 men seriously injured (Holland Schemwell, 2014). On the research uk 15th of free writing lessons July, 2010, the papers gushing wellhead was capped, but the Deepwater Horizon platform released over free, 4.9 million barrels or 780,000 m3 of crude oil into the Gulf of in the water rosenblatt Mexico (Griggs, 2011). This fact means that as a result of the explosion, over 53,000 barrels of oil were spilled each day of the accident (from July 10 till July 15) before the workers could cap the well. The experts state that for 87 days, the oil continued to flow to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, causing serious damage to the environment and local economy. In other words, crude oil was flowing into free writing lessons, the estuaries, marshes and essays beaches of three states affected by the spillage – Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi (Griggs, 2011). The U.S. government declared that the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico can be regarded as a national disaster. As a rule, an free creative lessons area contaminated by oil, is closely connected with the whole character of the affected environment.
The free spilling of oil leads to a wide range of the man water by roger essay negative consequences, including €śthe spread by wind and wave€ť (Bai Bai, 2014, p. 363). The oil spillage from the Deepwater Horizon platform floating on the surface could evaporate through air and free creative writing lessons sun, spreading over the water surface. As a result, oil spillage affected the change graduate essay environment, including the wildlife. Identification of three major risk management issues illustrated by the case. The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that occurred in 2010 gives an opportunity to identify three major risk management issues, which can be assessed by experts as significant risk management lessons. Writing! One of the key risk management issues is that €śthe oil spill took some weeks to checklist stop€ť (Hopkin, 2012, p. 175). Although the creative writing results of risk management assessment show that loss prevention measures in checklist revising essays the case of the creative writing lessons BP oil spill were in place to prevent the cert essays northern ireland oil spillage starting and the proper cost containment steps were taken to manage the cost of the required clean-up operations, recovery procedures to promote business continuation, much time had been lost.
According to Paul Hopkin (2012), €śit is, perhaps, the case that the damage limitation measures were not as robust as may have been required€ť(p. 175). Besides, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of writing Mexico has raised serious risk management issues regarding the governance of organization involved in the case. Risk management and governance in the BP organization are separate activities, which have their own committees and organize their own processes to achieve the established goals. According to researchers, €śthe BP oil spill disaster has clearly shown that the board has to own both the general governance of the cert history ireland organization and free lessons its many and varied risk activities€ť (Wright et al., 2013, p. 16). As a result, the the man in the water essay disaster created an enormous financial crisis, leading to poor reputation of the BP organization. According to Otto Lerbinger (2012), €śits image as a leader in creative deep sea technology was shattered, as well as its professed dedication to corporate social responsibility and the environment€ť(p. 24). Now the organization needs to research use the proper strategies aimed at restoring its reputation in order to successfully operate in the Gulf of Mexico. Based on the US federal government report that was issued in 2011 after investigation of the key causes of the disaster, the following failures were identified:
Poor risk management practices Last-minute changes in decision making (Anastas et al., 2010) Failure to adequately observe and effectively respond to critical indicators that were identified on the platform Inadequate and insufficient well control response €śInsufficient emergency bridge response training by employees responsible€ť (Guinness Walpole, 2012, p. 227). Comparing and contrast the way in which these three risk management issues were dealt with by the firm(s) involved with material presented in creative writing lessons the course or other reference material dealing with the concepts or issues that the the essay case illustrates. In the writing case discussed in this paper, the BP failed to avoid certain management errors that led to massive damage to the environment and caused considerable harm to people. Revising! The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon platform rig can be viewed as an example of €śa designation that is a prevailing contention of government and other reports on the disaster€ť (Lerbinger, 2012, p. 24). The disaster in free lessons the Gulf of Mexico that occurred in 2010 was caused by certain management failures both by the organization (the BP Company) and its contractors (Transocean and Halliburton).
Risk management practices were influenced by the wrong decision making associated with some technological problems. According to the man in the by roger rosenblatt the material presented in the course lectures, the risk management cycle involves several stages, which help an organization to manage risks: Identification, Quantification, Risk assessment, Risk treatment, Monitoring, Risk context. Free Creative Lessons! These stages are interrelated (Business Risk Management Week 2, 2014, p. 2). Based on the essay the established components of risk management process, it is possible to avoid negative consequences of disasters in all spheres of human activity, including oil and gas industry. In the Deepwater Horizon platform, many events led to the disaster because inadequate risk management practices were ineffective in free that situation. In the case of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, €śthe behaviors and attitudes of leaders have been disappointing at best and papers uk irresponsible at worst€ť (Corkindale, 2010, p.1). In this crisis, some leadership skills have been misunderstood by the key players. The BP are responsible for free, the environmental disaster, but the BP CEO Tony Hayward demonstrated some failures in leadership practices, providing control over the €śorganizational culture that sanctioned extreme risk-taking, ignored expert advice, overlooked warnings about safety issues and hid facts€ť (Corkindale, 2010, p.1). The BP leaders failed to research papers respond to the disaster with sufficient speed and attention. Actually, this failure was a result of the inconsistent organizational culture. Assessment of the effectiveness with which the crisis, created as a result of the creative writing failures in risk management evident in the case, was managed.
The effectiveness with which the crisis of the Deepwater Horizon platform, created as a result of the failures in risk management is career evident in this case. There are six stages of crisis management, including €śavoiding the crisis, preparing to manage the crisis, recognizing the crisis, containing the crisis, resolving the crisis and profiting from the crisis€ť (Business Risk Management Week 3, 2014, p. 1). Free Writing! The Deepwater Horizon platform€™s governance did not include all the above mentioned stages in its crisis management. In the Deepwater Horizon platform, there were serious problems with governance as the Company failed to examine all possible scenarios, assess all possible consequences and identify the cert essays cost of prevention of creative writing lessons these negative consequences. The response to the crisis was not planned in a proper way. This fact means the essay BP Company failed to free use the appropriate strategies to avoid the crisis. Online! Because of the free creative writing explosion on the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling platform, over 5 million barrels of oil were sent into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. This fact proves that the company failed to research papers avoid the crisis. According to researchers, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is an example of a €ścompany without crisis planning€ť (Cox, 2012, p. 87).
The BP disaster was an unexpected event, which required the implementation of the effective crisis planning. According to Charles E. Cox (2012), €śBP€™s advantage was that, even without a crisis plan, the company had billions of dollars in the bank and enough cash reserves to manage its way through the crisis and take steps to rebuild its reputation€ť (p. 88). Writing Lessons! Undoubtedly, the impact of the BP disaster was enormous because of the lack of the change graduate crisis planning. Mishandled communication influences the research papers company€™s response and the company€™s reputation.
The BP hired 2500 people on order to organize and conduct cleaning efforts in the states: Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida (Anastas et al., 2010). As a result, the company was judged by free the success the BP had in dealing with this disaster. The company employed many people to radiography papers collect oil and protect the shore line from pollution. This strategy to address the crisis was effective only free lessons, when sea was calm (Pennington-Gray et al., 2012). Thus, it is checklist essays necessary to free writing conclude that pollution from the activities of offshore companies leads to degradation of the marine environment. In those regions where major disasters take place, pollution can lead to the most devastating consequences both on the environment and human beings. The Deepwater Horizon disaster is one of the examples that can be used to teach some lessons. The key lessons that can be learned from the case are connected with risk management practices. The Deepwater Platform was operating under the revising essays BP contract (British Petroleum, the free creative lessons well-known multinational corporation headquartered in the UK).
The discharge of oil had negative impact on the region, caused serious damage to fisheries and marine habitants, bringing to light the risks of change deep water oil and gas drilling. The lessons that can be learned from the case give an opportunity to other companies to avoid negative consequences of the crisis and develop, maintain and implement effective crisis management practices. Free Writing! One of the most important strategies to manage crisis is to implement a well-developed crisis plan, provide effective control procedures and risk treatment systems that must be developed and implemented in the areas, where failures occur frequently.
