Roanoke Island: The Lost Colony Essay Sample. Of the countless words written about the beginnings of English America, perhaps none carries more of a story as these three letters: CRO. Essay God Their Topic. Not even a word, this syllable, this fragment, carved into a tree that stood in front of the abandoned English fort at Roanoke, encapsulates the legend of the Lost Colony. When John White returned to Roanoke in 1590 in the hopes of relieving, rescuing, or rejoining the colony he had left there three years earlier, he found all one hundred and ten people gone and the cryptic message left behind. The whole existence of the colony — its population, its habitation, its history — were condensed into a “secret token”: CRO. And yet John White believed this was a history he could read. In his narrative of these events, published by Richard Hakluyt in his Principal Navigation of 1600, he describes why: …upon a tree, in the very browe thereof were curiously carved there faire Romane letters CRO: … A secret token agreed upon 2010 canada between them and me at essay eyes god their watching, my last departure from then… [to] write or carve on the trees or posts of the dores the name of the place where they should be seated….If they should happen to be distressed in any of those places, that then they should carve over commonwealth 2010 canada the letters of the name a Crosse in this forme, but we found no such sign of distress. (Hakluyt, 1600) The story of the Lost Colony has the earmarks of a myth: recurrence, plasticity, and indeterminacy. The narrative has been repeated in different genres, and reworked toward different ends, from 1590 till the present time. The story can shrink and grow, from the topic dense encoding of a three-letter engraving to the endless dispersal of speculation upon what might have come before or after the making of that mark.
This narrative elasticity is linked to pennsylvania history essays and documents the story’s failure to conclude. As an unsolved mystery, it both invites elaboration and forbids closure, and eyes god their topic were, thus remains available as a cultural medium. Letter For English With No Experience. This research offers a genealogy of the Lost Colony. This entails reconstructing events from White’s success in finding the island of Roanoke in 1587 to his failed rescue mission in 1590. The story of Roanoke began in 1587 when John White led a group of English colonists to plant permanent and self-perpetuating English settlement in essay eyes god their watching were, North America. Pennsylvania Essays. The plan for the City of Raleigh, as the settlement was to be known, differed from earlier English attempts in eyes watching were, several important ways. The first difference was demographic. This group was largely comprised of on a playground, civilians and not soldiers, and of families and essay god their were, not individual young men sent out on tours of duty as with Grenville’s group. Essays. It was to essay eyes watching were be a community rather than a military outpost. The second difference was its destination. The colony was headed for the richer lands and deeper ports of the Chesapeake Bay, and not for the storm-ridden and dangerous shoals of the Outer Banks that had proven all but fatal to essay on a playground English ships and, consequently, to the interests of English investors.
The third difference was its economic base. The colony would sustain itself agriculturally while producing goods for English markets, instead of relying on English supply ships while settings its sights on privateering or the discovery of eyes god their topic watching, gold. A fourth difference was in its administration. The colonists were part of a corporation, and as such were granted status, land, and essays, a form of self-governance. God Their Topic. They thus held personal interest, responsibility, and advantage in the success of their colony. All of these changes were intentional, meant to repair the damage that had been done to the prospects for Virginia by earlier ventures. By all rights, things should have turned out very differently. Culturally and historically, the pennsylvania essays and documents “mysteries” of the lost colony get played out in series of questions: How did the group end up in Roanoke? Why did they stay there? Why did John White agree to god their topic were leave?
What might have happened had White returned with a supply? And most importantly, where did all these people go? What happened to them in the end? It is a story that has only a beginning — no middle and, definitely, no end. Scholars do concur on many facts about the 1587 settlement. White and his group set out as part of a larger fleet, and intended to stop in Roanoke only to check on essay Grenville’s men before continuing north to Chesapeake Bay. There in essay watching were, the northern Bay, probably near Kecoughtan, the research about colony was supposed to essay eyes topic watching plant itself while the fleet continued on its privateering mission. On A Playground. For some reason, after stopping at Roanoke and finding the fort abandoned the pilot Simon Fernandez announced that he would not take White’s group any further north but would leave them at Roanoke; in whose interests this decision was made remains uncertain. White yielded.
From there, things happened rather quickly. By July 25, 1587 the City of Raleigh settlers took up residence at Roanoke. On August 18 a baby girl was born, White’s own granddaughter to his daughter Eleanor Dare, and christened Virginia Dare on August 24. By August 20, it was clear to the group that they could not survive without immediate relief from England. The day after the christening, August 25, the group urged John White to go back to England and he reluctantly agreed. As the most influential person among the essay eyes topic were settlers, he was deemed the best qualified to make sure supplies were on their way. Current Essays In English. White arrived in England on November 8, 1587. From that point on, things happened very slowly. Because of the sea war between England and Spain, White could not get back to essay eyes god their watching America for three long years. Repeatedly, he tried and failed. Finally, on August 19, 1590, almost three years later, he returned to Roanoke to find his people gone, the fort razed, and the letters CRO engraved on the trunk of a tree.
And here, the facts of the matter grind to history essays a halt. In the god their topic watching midst of history essays, terrible storms, White could not convince the pilot and mariners to continue searching for the people he left three years earlier, although he strongly suspected at least some were waiting for him at Croatoan. Eyes God Their Topic Watching Were. The ships headed back to England, and (but for the chorus of voices who later told their story) the Roanoke settlers were never heard from commonwealth competition 2010, again. Historians speak in agreement on these central facts and eyes topic were, near unison in essays in english, this ominous finale, even if they then diverge into god their topic watching speculative epilogues about “what may have been.” However, take a look first at White’s careful account of the days between July 19 and August 25, before his colony was ever considered missing, or abandoned, or lost. The events of those days echo, in school admission essays, a less mysterious but more deeply uncanny way, the world the English already knew in essay god their topic watching were, Roanoke.
The birth of the infant Virginia Dare remains well-remembered as a first, a landmark event — even her name sounds like a motto for colonial valor. In the meantime, more significant occurrences in business school essays, White’s colony are well-forgotten: the death of a stray settler, an Indian battle report, a misguided attack that proved the essay eyes topic were perils of mistaken identity. These events both continue and repeat the catastrophic past of English colonial relations, and also recur in future settlements. History And Documents. Furthermore, unlike the essay fate of the competition lost colonists, these incidents are all in the record. It may have only been five weeks, but it is a history.
For now, the mystery of “what happened next” can wait while we revisit what did happen, or what seemed to happen, while the English were still attempting a settlement at essay eyes topic watching, Roanoke. Recall that White’s own history in Roanoke starts well before his colony in 1587. He was with Lane’s colony in 1585-86, when he undertook his explorations and collaborations with Thomas Hariot, and may have even accompanied Barlowe and Amadas in their 1584 reconnaissance trip. When he called in Roanoke in 1587, John White, now governor of the in english City of Raleigh, was back on familiar ground. Even before he reached the fort, he reckoned that Grenville’s men were gone, seeing no “sign that they had been there, saving only we found the bones of one of those fifteen, which the Savages had slain long before.”
This was the third time English people had found that very patch of land mysteriously forsaken in essay eyes god their topic watching were, the two years since Queen Elizabeth had granted it to found deserted by the supply ship that arrived after the evacuation of Lane’s colony. Although White “hoped to find some signs, or certain knowledge of our fifteen men,” he admitted to returning to the larger company “without hope of ever seeing any of the fifteen men living.” Looking for life and finding bones, shuttling between hope and loss of commonwealth canada, hope, White’s search depicts a confusing synchronicity of signs. Even the topic were dawning realization that people have disappeared conjures how the people themselves realized that they were truly finished. At some point, they came to know what any disappointed searcher now knows. Essay On A. White’s group took up the sacked English outpost and set the City of Raleigh upon the remnants of Roanoke. They could clear out the deer and melons that had taken over the standing English houses, but they could not clear out the history of Anglo-Native relations that surrounded the eyes god their razed fort. This became clear within days. Playground. An air of melancholy, mystery and powerlessness surrounding White’s colony serves to essay watching were fogs over the next month’s chain of events, but re-capturing even some of those incidents — the stray death, the and documents battle report, the were attack damaged by mistaken identity — can help us see that although John White may have found the fort deserted, it was never empty. George Howe was the competition first casualty of the fort’s third occupation. White offers a thick description of Howe’s death.
He reports on that on July 28, “diverse savages” came to Roanoke either to hunt deer or to essay god their topic spy on the new arrivals, keeping cover among the tall reeds. The contrast between Howe’s position — alone, naked, unarmed, astray, concentrated on the single basic task of 2010 canada, trying to feed himself — contrasts sharply with the natives’ position, who coordinate, conceal themselves, attack suddenly, overkill, mutilate, and essay eyes, flee. English representations of these attacks resonated within their own narrative folk tradition the lost hero beset by evil nature — a single human figure wandering unawares into a landscape that suddenly grows animate and deadly. White depicts the Indians on the cusp of killing George Howe as the predators of vulnerable creatures. It was only after George Howe’s death that White and the new group at Roanoke became intent on discovering what happened to Grenville’s men. As White puts it, “we hoped to understand some news of our fifteen men, but especially, to learn the disposition of the people of the country towards us.” The story came in the shape of a report from Manteo, who had returned to England with Lane’s colony, and was now an established go-between whom the English relied upon to ease native relations.
The reunion of Manteo with his people on Croatoan was not without tension. At first the commonwealth essay Croatoans poised to fight, and then fled from the English, returning only after Manteo called them in eyes god their were, their own language. After a greeting and festive welcome, the Croatoans tactfully showed White a lame man who had been injured by Lane’s company, when the English mistook the current essays friendly Croatoan for an enemy Secotan. Still, the essay eyes god their topic were Croatoans asked for some emblem of friendship to avoid further confusions. White did not record fulfilling this request, but did claim he also was willing to forgive and current essays, forget, and asked the Croatoans to help secure the promise of future friendship from the Secotans and nearby Aquosconocs and Pomeioks. At this point, Manteo pledged that the Croatoans would do their best to broker a detente, but he also reported it was common knowledge in the country that late Wingina’s Secotans, in company with the eyes former English traveler Wanchese, were responsible both for Howe’s recent death, and also for the forceful ousting of Grenville’s men. By August 8, John White “thought to defer revenge… no longer.” His group, which was expressly not a military deployment, had been at playground, Roanoke fourteen days when a midnight crew of men, including Manteo as their guide, “passed over the water” into Dasamonquepeuck. It had been fourteen months since Lane’s 1586 attack on the same village which ended with the eyes god their topic death of essays, Wingina/Pemisipan. Like Lane’s, White’s report is eyes focused most intently on moments when injured Indians are in an indiscernible state between life and current, death. Seeking to avoid just this kind of revenge, the residents of Dasamonquepeuck, “Wingina’s remnant,” left their village directly after killing George Howe, and left their crops un-harvested.
The “miserable souls” thus “amazed” by the attacking English were actually Croatoans, mistaken once again for hostile Secotans. They had gone to essay eyes topic watching were Dasamonquepeuck to gather the corn, tobacco, and pumpkins the Secotans left behind. In the dark, however, White claimed he could not distinguish his friends from current, his enemies. Eyes God Their. Because the people sitting at the fire were either naked or “appareled all so like others,” White wrote that he and his party did not even recognize that women and children were among them; they literally only stopped from slaying the Croatoan werowance’s wife by suddenly realizing she had a child at her back. In the immediate aftermath of this debacle, White reported two christenings, solemn and deliberate acts of bequeathing identity and the status of belonging. The one remembered is Virginia Dare’s, “the first Christian borne in Virginia.” But in the days after the English attack on the Croatoan group, White wrote, “our Savage Manteo, by cover with no experience the commandment of Sir Walter Raleigh, was christened in Roanoke, and called Lord thereof, and of Dasamonquepeuck, in reward of essay eyes topic watching, his faithful service”. Not long after the christenings, a third and final seal was issued in the settlement of Roanoke. It was a testimony sworn and sealed by the English settlers and delivered to their governor. Business Essays. It certified that they were sending John White back to England “for the present and speedy supply of certain our known and apparent lacks and essay god their topic were, needs”. School Admission Essays. White was not abandoning them, they vowed, but was only answering the incessant and urgent plea of his colony. Though much against his will White had finally yielded to leave his government in god their topic, their hands, and to return to England on their behalf.
This was the last official act of the City of Raleigh before it became the business Lost Colony. Essay Topic Watching. White was afraid that he would be discredited if his intentions to save the colony were not made clear. Due to the naval war between England and Spain, it was three years before White returned. As White describes it, nineteen men on letter teacher with two boars anchored in the “exceeding dark” night, “sounded with a trumpet, a call, and essay eyes topic were, afterwards many familiar English turns of songs, as called to them friendly; but we had no answer.” Despite this silence, White came onto shore at daybreak and found two kinds of human signatures. One was “in the sand the print of the paper about Salvages feet 2 or 3 sorts trodden that night.” These were traces of people who had heard the songs coming from White’s boat. The other war “upon a tree, in essay god their, the very brow thereof were curiously carved these fair Roman letters: CRO.” This was the trace of people who had not heard those songs. White followed these signs, and approached the fort that had been abandoned for the fourth time. Passing through the history and documents gate, White found bars of iron and pigs of lead, guns, and eyes god their topic were, light cannons “almost overgrown with grass and weeds.” At the shore there was no sign of them. Hidden buried chests hoarding valuables, including many of letter with, White’s own, were dug up and topic were, pilfered through.
These chests had been buried in trenches originally dug by in english crew of Barlowe and Amadas, and eyes god their were, now their contents were scattered all around the empty ditches. And so, while over a hundred people had simply vanished, the bark of with, a tree, gnarled like a troubled brow, bore the symbols of empire in the shape of Roman letters and a truncated Indian word. The second inscription was a repetition of the first, five feet up White noted, just about as high as an English body of that time could reach and still make a letter fair. Eyes. The tools of colonization were there — books, pictures, and maps — but they were torn and spoiled. The means of enforcement were there — armor, cannons, iron — but they were corroded and entangled. The story of Roanoke is, by its very nature, unmappable, but despite its dislocated status it exerts considerable power in the literature and on a, history of English settlement. Roanoke’s Lost Colony has mystified researchers from the time it disappeared until present.
There exists a basic historical consensus on topic the problems that consigned Roanoke to failure such as the pennsylvania essays geographical problems of a shallow shoreline, the economic problems of essay eyes topic were, privateering’s influence, the political problems of a military outpost’s relation with native cultures, and the twin pressures of rumor and competition, abandonment. Early settlements, and especially there first colonial forays, relied almost entirely on continued, reliable sponsorship and supply coming from groups in essay were, England. But these groups were notoriously unstable. Thus, misrepresentation when combined with rumors of abandonment, became ruinous to the fate of colonies. Some believe (even White) that the letter for english teacher with no experience settlers had voluntarily moved to the Indian village of Croatoan, 40 miles south of Roanoke, where they had secured at least a temporary safe haven through their alliance with Manteo. However, if they moved further northward, they will be inevitably killed by either the Powhatans or the severe winter. John White, however, was not given the chance to confirm his hypothesis. Essay God Their Topic Were. He did not make it to Croatoan to recover his colony, or its remainder. The small English fleet that carried White back to cover for english with Roanoke in 1590 was interested in finding an established colony only essay god their topic watching were, insofar as it might be used as someplace to spend winter months while waiting to seize upon Spanish ships in the West Indies in teacher with no experience, the spring. On White’s urging, they briefly considered going on to Croatoan but the vagaries of ship faring on the North Carolinian coast decidedly intervened. Weather grew foul, cables broke, anchors were lost, ships almost grounded, and fresh water supply rapidly dwindled.
John White’s objectives came no where close to prevailing, and he was left to commit his “discomfortable company the essay god their watching planters in Virginia, to the merciful help of the Almighty.” And to the pages of history. In 1937, there circulated rumors of a stone beside a swamp in school, Georgia bearing a writing: Ananias Dare and Virginia went hence unto Heaven 1591. Eyes God Their. The grocer who had found the stone realized that this is an answer to the puzzle that mystified America for about 400 years and so brought it to Emory University in Atlanta for study. The university then invited a specialist in American History, by the person of Samuel Eliot Morison, to have a closer look at admission, the stone. Morison agreed that it certainly looked like real. Essay Eyes God Their Topic. Additional stones were found many bearing Eleanor Dare’s name. However, when the professors searched for the grocer, they found that there are no records of such a person in pennsylvania, California. Beginning to essay god their watching were doubt the authenticity of the stone, they brought the essay competition stones to an Elizabethan scholar in England for a closer look. The scholar disagreed that the stone may not be authentic since were in Roman letters and early Elizabethans wrote in Gothic script unless they were highly educated. Moreover, there are two words in the writings that are not yet known in England at that time. Thus, the stones were a ruse.
Many projects have been established in essay god their watching were, order to search for clues and find answers behind the current in english story of the essay god their topic watching were Lost Colony. Since 1653, researchers and archaeologists have been digging to the supposed location of Roanoke’s Lost Colony. In 1895, Talcott Williams, a journalist in Philadelphia and an amateur archaeologist, attempted to search for artifacts by in english digging the supposed site of the eyes god their watching Lost Colony. During the late 1940s, professional archaeologists dug on some excavations and were able to find some artifacts that might belong to Harriot’s science laboratory built during the English’s first attempt to colonize the Roanoke Island. However, they were still unable to pennsylvania find the actual location of the lost colonist’s village.
Some believe that the eyes god their topic were failure of these projects to find the actual location of White’s Roanoke Colony and artifacts from the said colony is linked with the islands shoreline erosion. Dolan and Bosserman explain that although researches and studies have not found the actual location of the settlement site of paper pollution, White’s Roanoke Colony, there are evidences that indicate the site is located within a short distance from the shore of the island. Eyes Watching. They further explain that since 1587, the time White arrived at the fort of the research paper island, the shoreline has not been stable. Regarding the essay topic stability of the island’s shoreline, it is, therefore not surprising that no one has found neither the actual location of the settlement site nor any artifacts that suggest of the existence (or disappearance) of the colony. The most recent addition to the many projects attempting to discover the truth behind the disappearance of commonwealth essay competition canada, Roanoke’s Colony is the First Colony Foundation launched early on March 2004. The project was started by Phil Evans, a North Carolina attorney. The project aimed to find further clues about eyes god their topic watching Harriot’s science laboratory and the actual location of the colonists’ village. The project has the same hypothesis as Dolan and pennsylvania, Bosserman — that the colonists’ village must have been eroded away.
Given the diversity of these sources it is most interesting to find that, despite different aims and audiences, almost all treatments of Roanoke end similarly, trailing off into a resonant silence in which the lost or abandoned settlers are neither absent nor present, but finally un-locatable even to history. This reverberating sentiment — “and they were never heard from again” — is a negative corollary to the classic narrative finale — “and they lived happily ever after.” It keeps a story going as much as the latter phrase seals one off. Eyes God Their Watching. While popular sources pluck this final string with varying degrees of unabashed theatrically, academic treatments also participate in recreating the aura of mystery. As Evans said, “As long as the Lost Colony is unexplained, it stays fascinating for history a lot of people.” Roanoke was left to speak for essay eyes god their watching were itself, because it stopped the speech of others. Even John White’s words for the people he led were few and conflicting, first rejoicing that they must have found relief in Croatoan, but later calling the colonial attempt “luckless to many” and “sinister to myself.” Like the planters, the soldiers, the slaves, the dead bodies; the and documents wrecked books and drawings, the wrecked houses and ships; the knowledge of rivers and blunders of identity; the villages de-populated willingly or unwillingly; the Indian leaders bound, murdered, beheaded or crowned — like all of these other missing things, the essay god their were story of a Lost Colony itself was “left there,” both part and pennsylvania history essays, not part of the English plan for America, both compelling and were, resisting further action. In order to change a given situation, we must change ourselves, and in order to change ourselves, we must be able to change our perceptions. We all want to essays, succeed. And one path to success is identifying the habits that can help us on our journey. I recommend starting that path by reading Stephen Covey’s best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People . Don't have time to read all 432 pages? I get it -- most of us don't. Eyes Topic Watching. That's why we summarized the history and documents, entire book for you below.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The book opens with an explanation of eyes topic were how many individuals who have achieved a high degree of outward success still find themselves struggling with an cover, inner need for developing personal effectiveness and growing healthy relationships with other people. Covey believes the way we see the world is eyes topic entirely based on our own perceptions. In order to change a given situation, we must change ourselves, and in order to change ourselves, we must be able to change our perceptions. In studying over on a playground, 200 years of literature on the concept of success, Covey identified a very important change in the way that humans have defined success over time.
In earlier times, the foundation of success rested upon essay god their topic watching character ethic (things like integrity, humility, fidelity, temperance, courage, justice, patience, industry, simplicity, modesty, and admission essays the Golden Rule). But starting around the 1920s, the way people viewed success shifted to what Covey calls personality ethic (where success is a function of personality, public image, attitudes and behaviors). These days, people look for quick fixes. They see a successful person, team, or organization and ask, How do you do it? Teach me your techniques! But these “shortcuts” that we look for, hoping to save time and effort and watching were still achieve the desired result, are simply band-aids that will yield short-term solutions; they don't address the underlying condition. The way we see the canada, problem is the problem, Covey writes. We must allow ourselves to undergo paradigm shifts -- to change ourselves fundamentally and not just alter our attitudes and behaviors on essay god their topic were the surface level -- in pennsylvania essays order to achieve true change. That's where the seven habits of highly effective people come in: Habits 1, 2, and essay eyes god their topic 3 are focused on self-mastery and moving from dependence to independence. Habits 4, 5, and 6 are focused on developing teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills, and moving from independence to interdependence.
Habit 7 is focused on continuous growth and improvement, and embodies all the other habits. We’re in charge. We choose the scripts by which to live our lives. Use this self-awareness to be proactive and take responsibility for your choices. The first habit that Covey discusses is being proactive. What distinguishes us as humans from all other animals is essay our inherent ability to examine our own character, to god their topic watching, decide how to view ourselves and our situations, and to essay on a playground, control our own effectiveness. Put simply, in order to be effective one must be proactive. Reactive people take a passive stance -- they believe that the world is happening to them. Essay Eyes Topic Watching Were. They say things like: They think the problem is out there -- but that thought is the problem.
Reactivity becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, and reactive people feel increasingly victimized and out of business school admission control. Proactive people, however, recognize that they have responsibility -- or response-ability, which Covey defines as the ability to choose how you will respond to a given stimulus or situation. It is our willing permission, our consent to what happens to us, that hurts us far more than what happened to us in the first place. -Stephen Covey. In order to god their watching were, be proactive, we must focus on the Circle of Influence that lies within our Circle of Concern-- in other words, we must work on the things we can do something about. The positive energy we exert will cause our Circle of Influence to expand. Reactive people, on the other hand, focus on things that are in research paper pollution their Circle of Concern but not in their Circle of Influence, which leads to blaming external factors, emanating negative energy, and causing their Circle of eyes god their topic watching Influence to shrink.
Challenge yourself to test the essay competition, principle of proactivity by doing the following: 1. Essay God Their. Start replacing reactive language with proactive language. 2. Convert reactive tasks into proactive ones. HABIT 2: Begin with the End in Mind. Start with a clear destination in research paper pollution mind. Covey says we can use our imagination to develop a vision of what we want to become and use our conscience to decide what values will guide us. Most of us find it rather easy to busy ourselves. We work hard to achieve victories -- promotions, higher income, more recognition. But we don't often stop to evaluate the meaning behind this busyness, behind these victories -- we don't ask ourselves if these things that we focus on so intently are what really matter to us.
Habit 2 suggests that, in eyes god their watching everything we do, we should begin with the end in research paper mind. God Their Topic Watching. Start with a clear destination. That way, we can make sure the steps we’re taking are in the right direction. School Essays. It's incredibly easy to watching were, get caught up in an activity trap, in the busyness of life, to work harder and business admission harder at climbing the ladder of success only to topic watching, discover that it's leaning against the wrong wall. -Stephen Covey. Covey emphasizes that our self-awareness empowers us to shape our own lives, instead of research paper about living our lives by default, or based on the standards or preferences of others. Beginning with the end in mind is also extremely important for businesses. Being a manager is about optimizing for eyes topic, efficiency.
But being a leader is about setting the essay 2010, right strategic vision for your organization in the first place, and asking, What are we trying to accomplish? Before we as individuals or organizations can start setting and achieving goals, we must be able to identify our values. This process may involve some rescripting to be able to assert our own personal values. Rescripting, Covey explains, is topic watching were recognizing ineffective scripts that have been written for you, and changing those scripts by essay proactively writing new ones that are built of your own values. It is also important to identify our center. Whatever is at the center of our life will be the source of our security, guidance, wisdom, and power. Our centers affect us fundamentally -- they determine our daily decisions, actions, and motivations, as well as our interpretation of events.
However, Covey notes that none of these centers are optimal, and that instead we should strive to be principle-centered. We should identify the timeless, unchanging principles by which we must live our lives. Eyes Were. This will give us the guidance that we need to align our behaviors with our beliefs and values. Challenge yourself to test the principle of beginning with the teacher with, end in mind by doing the following: 1. Eyes Topic Watching Were. Visualize in rich detail your own funeral. 2010. Who is there? What are they saying about you? About how you lived your life? About the relationships you had? What do you want them to say? Think about how your priorities would change if you only had 30 more days to live.
Start living by these priorities. 2. Break down different roles in your life -- whether professional, personal, or community -- and list three to five goals you want to achieve for each. 3. Define what scares you. Public speaking? Critical feedback after writing a book?
Write down the worst-case scenario for your biggest fear, then visualize how you'll handle this situation. Write down exactly how you'll handle it. In order to manage ourselves effectively, we must put first things first. We must have the discipline to prioritize our day-to-day actions based on what is most important, not what is most urgent. Essay Topic Were. In Habit 2, we discussed the importance of determining our values and understanding what it is we are setting out to cover letter for english teacher no experience, achieve. Topic. Habit 3 is all about actually going after these goals, and executing on current essays in english our priorities on a day-to-day, moment-to-moment basis. In order to maintain the discipline and the focus to stay on track toward our goals, we need to have the willpower to do something when we don’t want to do it. We need to essay god their watching, act according to our values rather than our desires or impulses at any given moment.
The challenge is not to manage time, but to manage ourselves. -Stephen Covey. All activities can be categorized based on business school admission essays two factors: Urgent and important. Take a look at eyes watching this time management matrix: We react to urgent matters. We spend our time doing things that are not important. That means that we neglect Quadrant II, which is the essay, actually most crucial of them all.
If we focus on Quadrant I and spend our time managing crises and problems, it keeps getting bigger and essay eyes god their topic watching bigger until it consumes us. These leads to stress, burnout, and constantly putting out fires. If we focus on Quadrant III , we spend most of essay our time reacting to matters that seem urgent, when the reality is their perceived urgency is topic based on commonwealth essay competition the priorities and expectations of others. This leads to essay topic watching, short-term focus, feeling out of control, and shallow or broken relationships. If we focus on Quadrant IV, we are basically leading an irresponsible life. This often leads to and documents, getting fired from essay eyes topic watching jobs and being highly dependent on others.
Quadrant II is at the heart of effective personal management. It deals with things like building relationships, long-term planning, exercising, preparation -- all things we know we need to do but somehow seldom get around to actually doing, because they don’t feel urgent. In order to focus our time in Quadrant II, we have to learn how to say “no” to other activities, sometimes ones that seem urgent. We also need to be able to delegate effectively. The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities. -Stephen Covey. Plus, when we focus on Quadrant II, it means we’re thinking ahead, working on the roots, and preventing crises from happening in the first place! This helps us implement the Pareto Principle -- 80% of your results come from cover for english with 20% of your time. Essay Eyes God Their Topic. We should always maintain a primary focus on relationships and results, and a secondary focus on time. Think effectiveness with people and efficiency with things. School. -Stephen Covey. Write it down and commit to implementing it. 2. Create your own time management matrix to start prioritizing. 3. Essay Topic Watching Were. Estimate how much time you spend in each quadrant. Then log your time over 3 days. Essay On A Playground. How accurate was your estimate? How much time did you spend in Quadrant II (the most important quadrant)? In order to essay eyes god their topic watching were, establish effective interdependent relationships, we must commit to creating Win-Win situations that are mutually beneficial and satisfying to each party. Essay. Covey explains that there are six paradigms of human interaction: 1. God Their Topic Watching. Win-Win: Both people win. Agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial and satisfying to both parties.
2. Win-Lose: “ If I win, you lose. ” Win-Lose people are prone to use position, power, credentials, and personality to get their way. 3. Lose-Win: “ I lose, you win. ” Lose-Win people are quick to please and appease, and seek strength from popularity or acceptance. Research Paper. 4. Lose-Lose: Both people lose. When two Win-Lose people get together -- that is, when two determined, stubborn, ego-invested individuals interact -- the result will be Lose-Lose. 5. Eyes Watching Were. Win: People with the Win mentality don’t necessarily want someone else to research paper about, lose -- that’s irrelevant. What matters is that they get what they want.
6. Win-Win or No Deal: If you can’t reach an agreement that is mutually beneficial, there is eyes watching were no deal. Commonwealth. The best option is to create Win-Win situations. With Win-Lose, or Lose-Win, one person appears to get what he wants for the moment, but the results will negatively impact the relationship between those two people going forward. The Win-Win or No Deal option is important to use as a backup. When we have No Deal as an option in our mind, it liberates us from needing to manipulate people and push our own agenda. We can be open and really try to understand the underlying issues. In solving for Win-Win, we must consider two factors: Consideration and courage. Take a look at god their watching were the following chart: To go for commonwealth essay competition 2010 canada, Win-Win, you not only have to be nice, you have to be courageous. -Stephen Covey. Another important factor in solving for Win-Win situations is maintaining an eyes watching were, Abundance Mentality, or the belief that there's plenty out there for everyone.
Most people operate with the Scarcity Mentality -- meaning they act as though everything is zero-sum (in other words, if you get it, I don’t). People with the current essays in english, Scarcity Mentality have a very hard time sharing recognition or credit and essay topic watching were find it difficult to current essays, be genuinely happy about other people’s successes. When it comes to interpersonal leadership, the more genuine our character is, the higher our level of proactivity; the god their topic watching were, more committed we are to Win-Win, the more powerful our influence will be. To achieve Win-Win, keep the focus on results, not methods; on problems, not people. About Pollution. Lastly, the spirit of eyes topic watching were Win-Win can’t survive in an environment of competition. As an current essays in english, organization, we need to essay god their topic were, align our reward system with our goals and values and have the systems in place to support Win-Win. Get yourself to start thinking Win-Win with these challenges: 1. Think about an upcoming interaction where you’ll be attempting to reach an agreement or solution. Rather than wasting time by copying and pasting email templates that you use every day, we recommend using HubSpot's free CRM to easily send personalized email templates in Gmail and Outlook. HABIT 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. Before we can offer advice, suggest solutions, or effectively interact with another person in any way, we must seek to deeply understand them and their perspective through empathic listening. Let’s say you go to an optometrist and tell him that you’ve been having trouble seeing clearly, and on a he takes off his glasses, hands them to essay eyes god their watching were, you and says, “Here, try these -- they’ve been working for me for years!” You put them on, but they only make the problem worse. Research Pollution. What are the chances you’d go back to that optometrist?
Unfortunately, we do the same thing in our everyday interactions with others. We prescribe a solution before we diagnose the problem. We don’t seek to deeply understand the problem first. Habit 5 says that we must seek first to understand, then to be understood. In order to seek to god their watching were, understand, we must learn to listen. You’ve spent years of your life learning how to read and write, years learning how to speak. But what about listening? -Stephen Covey. We can’t simply use one technique to understand someone. In fact, if a person senses that we’re manipulating her, she will question our motives and will no longer feel safe opening up to commonwealth competition 2010 canada, us. You have to build the skills of empathic listening on eyes watching were a base of character that inspires openness and trust. -Stephen Covey.
To listen empathically requires a fundamental paradigm shift. Paper About. We typically seek first to be understood. Most people listen with the intent to reply , not to understand . God Their Watching Were. At any given moment, they’re either speaking or preparing to speak. After all, Covey points out, communication experts estimate that: 10% of teacher with no experience our communication is represented by our words [CLICK TO TWEET] 30% is represented by our sounds[CLICK TO TWEET] 60% is god their topic watching were represented by our body language[CLICK TO TWEET] When we listen autobiographically -- in other words, with our own perspective as our frame of reference -- we tend to respond in one of four ways: 1. Paper. Evaluate: Agree or disagree with what is said. 2. Eyes Watching Were. Probe: Ask questions from our own frame of about reference.
3. Advise: Give counsel based on eyes topic watching our own experience. On A. 4. Interpret: Try to figure out the person’s motives and behavior based on our own motives and behavior. But if we replace these types of response with empathic listening, we see dramatic results in improved communication. It takes time to make this shift, but it doesn’t take nearly as long to practice empathic listening as it does to back up and correct misunderstandings, or to live with unexpressed and unresolved problems only to have them surface later on. The second part of Habit 5 is “ . Essay Eyes God Their Topic Were. then to be understood.” This is equally critical in achieving Win-Win solutions. Seeking to understand requires consideration; seeking to be understood takes courage. -Stephen Covey.
When we’re able to present our ideas clearly, and in on a the context of a deep understanding of the other person’s needs and concerns, we significantly increase the credibility of your ideas. Here are a few ways to get yourself in the habit of essay eyes god their topic watching were seeking first to understand: 1. Next time you’re watching two people communicating, cover your ears and watch. What emotions are being communicated that might not come across through words alone? Was one person or the other more interested in the conversation? Write down what you noticed. 2. Next time you give a presentation, root it in empathy.
Begin by describing the audience's point of view in great detail. What problems are they facing? How is what you're about to say offering a solution to commonwealth essay canada, their problems? For example, if you plant two plants close together, their roots will co-mingle and improve the eyes god their topic watching were, quality of the soil, so that both plants will grow better than they would on their own. Synergy allows us to create new alternatives and open new possibilities. History. It allows us as a group to collectively agree to ditch the old scripts and write new ones. Without doubt, you have to leave the comfort zone of base camp and confront an entirely new and unknown wilderness. -Stephen Covey. So how can we introduce synergy to a given situation or environment?

Once you have these in mind, you can pool your desires with those of the essay eyes god their watching were, other person or group. Business School Essays. And then you’re not on opposite sides of the problem -- you’re together on one side, looking at the problem, understanding all the needs, and working to create a third alternative that will meet them. What we end up with is god their topic were not a transaction, but a transformation. Both sides get what they want, and they build their relationship in research paper about the process. By putting forth a spirit of trust and safety, we will prompt others to become extremely open and feed on each other’s insights and ideas, creating synergy. The real essence of synergy is valuing the differences -- the essay eyes god their topic were, mental, emotional, and business school psychological differences between people. The key to valuing differences is to realize that all people see the world, not as it is, but as they are. -Stephen Covey. Topic Were. After all, if two people have the same opinion, one is unnecessary. When we become aware of someone’s different perspective, we can say, “Good! You see it differently!

Amnesty International has gone so far as to enlist its millions of members in a worldwide campaign against human rights abuses in the United States; at the 1999 session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, Amnesty International listed the U.S. as a major human rights priority, along with Algeria, Cambodia, Turkey, and the Great Lakes region of Africa, which embraces Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. What accounts for 2010 canada this upsurge of concern over the American record? Ordinarily, human rights organizations issue reports in response to clear and verifiable patterns of eyes watching, human rights abuses, such as the imprisonment of commonwealth essay, democracy advocates in China or the massacre of eyes god their watching were, Christians in India. Or they may shine the spotlight on a particular country because of a generalized deterioration in a broad range of human rights, as has been the case in essays Belarus. Eyes Topic Watching Were! Or they may discover violations of rights which have been overlooked in the past, such as female genital mutilation in various African countries. By any reasonable criteria, America does not qualify as a human rights problem. Like all societies, the school essays United States suffers its share of eyes watching, social ills.
Nevertheless, its record of protecting the rights of society’s most vulnerable groups ranks with the best in the world. Layer upon layer of business school admission essays, laws, administrative regulations, and court decrees exist to promote the fair treatment of racial minorities, immigrants, the handicapped, women, children, the elderly, the mentally ill, and religious believers (and non-believers as well). Although homosexuals are not extended the protection of most federal civil rights laws, the essay eyes god their watching states have increasingly included gays and lesbians in the roster of classes protected by anti-discrimination legislation. Yet to essays and documents its critics, the U.S. is not a country where special rights have been adopted for those who might conceivably suffer discrimination, but a cheerless place where the individual is at the mercy of a pitiless market economy and essay god their topic watching were a brutal police regime. True enough, while in America all manner of rights are protected, this is also a society where heavy demands are placed on essay playground, the individual. Among the rich nations, the United States has one of the least generous social welfare systems. Unemployment benefits are limited, and there is no national health insurance system for ordinary workers as in many European countries. Under new legislation, the able-bodied poor, including single mothers, are being pushed off the welfare rolls and into the job market. Furthermore, America has become highly integrated into the global economy, something which has accelerated the essay topic watching were decline of the older industrial base, disrupted the lives of millions of displaced workers, and led to the decline of once-vibrant cities.
It is current in english, this second, highly distorted, image of America—an America where, critics contend, the eyes rich get richer and more powerful at the expense of everyone else—which seems to predominate among the major human rights organizations. The Amnesty International report speaks of the U.S. as a country “beset by social problems, including unemployment, disease, and violent crime,” and riddled with “extreme poverty.” That Amnesty International is wrong on every point in its assessment of America’s socioeconomic condition is beside the point. History Essays! If human rights organizations believe that America’s political leaders treat the essay eyes watching were economic plight of the letter teacher with poor and vulnerable with extreme indifference, then it is only logical that they would expect America to violate the constitutional and human rights of its citizens as well. Two issues in particular have drawn the attention of the human rights community. The first involves the methods America has chosen to wage its war on essay were, crime. The second is discrimination against non-whites or, to current essays in english place the matter in a broader and more appropriate context, the essay country’s efforts to research about build a successful multinational society. The American criminal justice system has come under fire from different sources and for different reasons in recent years. America is one of the few developed societies to permit capital punishment, and the use of the death penalty has become rather common in certain states, such as Texas. America has one of the highest rates of incarceration in the world, and in many states, those convicted of violent crimes or drug-related offenses are being handed lengthy sentences with stipulations that most or all of the sentence must be served. Much of the essay eyes god their watching were increase in the prison population is due to the war on on a, drugs, a controversial subject even within the law enforcement profession.
Critics claim that sentencing petty drug dealers to years in essay god their topic were the penitentiary is unjust and even discriminatory, since a high proportion of drug crime defendants are black. There is also the commonwealth essay competition 2010 question of police abuse. In 1998, Human Rights Watch issued a lengthy study which claimed that police misconduct constituted a major human rights problem and asserted that in many American cities police officers guilty of abuse frequently go unpunished. Although human rights organizations have issued dozens of critical reports on various aspects of American criminal justice, they have betrayed no interest in the broad question of crime in the United States. This may be because of essay topic watching, their position that the context of a human rights violation is immaterial, and the question of how best to wage the war against crime is the responsibility of law enforcement professionals. This is admission, a purist, and ultimately insufficient, argument. Essay Were! If we have learned anything over the past thirty years, it is that high levels of crime, or the public perception that crime is out of control, can present an even greater threat to democracy, the rule of paper pollution, law, and human rights than the abuse of essay god their, power by the authorities or draconian sentencing policies. The impact of violent crime on American democracy was an for english teacher with, important theme of Haynes Johnson’s 1994 book, Divided We Fall. After having spent months touring the essay topic were country and testing the mood of the people, Johnson concluded:
No subject generates more concern than violent crime, none touches. people more deeply and personally, none triggers more emotion. More than any issue, including jobs and education, the growing. specter of current essays, violence leads people to think that something. fundamental has been broken in America…. When people are asked what they think can be done about eyes god their, “it,” the answer that invariably comes back is either “I don’t know” or “Nothing!” Crime is believed to be beyond the essays society’s. capacity to eliminate. Johnson and other authors have expressed concern over what they see as a steady erosion of essay topic were, American civil society. They point to commonwealth essay 2010 canada a weakening of the broad institutions, such as the public schools, which gave Americans the sense of belonging to essay were a single nation. They express disappointment at the lack of racial integration in schools and neighborhoods.
They accuse government of willfully ignoring the plight of the inner city poor. They lament the abandonment of urban America by the middle class. The role of violent crime in each of these problems, and business school many more, is central. Essay Watching Were! Parents who enroll their children in private schools cite safety as often as they cite quality education. They do not find the presence of metal detectors or security guards reassuring; if the public schools find it necessary to take such extreme steps, they would prefer to move to the suburbs and a safer environment or send their children to non-public schools, despite the letter for english teacher with no experience expense. Security has also played a major role in the rise of “gated communities.” Critics who regard America as a society in decline often point to essay watching were the expansion of apartment complexes or residential developments which feature high-tech security devices and private security guards as clear evidence that the rich are walling themselves off from the rest of cover teacher no experience, society. But while there may be a complex series of motives in the creation of gated communities, logic suggests that fear of criminals and lack of faith in the criminal justice system is the most important consideration. The deterioration of the inner city is, of course, directly attributable to crime and especially to drug-related crime. Essay Eyes! The failure of schools, businesses, the abandonment of housing, the flight of entrepreneurs and potential community leaders—all reflect the impact of high crime rates in minority neighborhoods over business the past three decades. And, of course, crime has had a major impact on American politics.
Indeed, the widespread sense that liberals were “soft on crime” was a huge factor in the Republican ascendancy of the 1970s and 1980s. With some justification, liberals became identified with such notions as that the essay eyes god their topic watching were “root causes” of essays, crime were more important than controlling crime, that ensuring the rights of essay god their topic watching were, criminal defendants was a higher priority than getting criminals off the streets, and that to call for a war on crime was to essay appeal to the racial prejudices of the white electorate. With liberals unwilling to confront the public’s distress over rising crime rates, the way was paved for the rise of eyes topic, demagogues like George Wallace, whose presidential campaign siphoned off many blue-collar Democratic votes, and essays Frank Rizzo, the tough talking mayor of Philadelphia. The perception that the state was incapable of dealing with the upsurge of eyes god their topic watching, violent crime also eroded the public’s confidence in the core institutions of democracy. Although the responsibilities of government have grown considerably since the essay competition 2010 canada early days of the eyes topic watching were Republic, most Americans still regard public safety as government’s principal mission. Americans can hardly be blamed for believing that something fundamental in pennsylvania history and documents the democratic fabric had given way when high law enforcement officials were expressing doubts over winning the war on crime.
The logic ran that if government cannot make the streets safe, why should citizens believe that it can educate their children, reduce poverty, or spend taxes wisely? It is because of the central nature of the relationship between law enforcement and people’s faith in eyes the institutions of democracy that recent developments loom so crucial. For in fact, there is mounting evidence that through a combination of current essays, public policies and essay eyes watching were new policing techniques, crime has undergone a substantial decrease in practically every major city of the United States. The most notable decrease has been in the violent crime categories—murders, assaults, rapes. Americans are still concerned about violent crime, and may continue to express skepticism about government’s ability to bring peace to the streets. Yet when asked about their greatest concerns, Americans no longer list crime as issue number one; they are more likely to rank crime below education, Social Security, medical care, and other domestic issues.
There are a number of reasons for the decrease in violent crime that has been recorded in current in english each of the past seven years. Perhaps the most important is the trend toward lengthy prison sentences, which has ensured that, at any given moment, many potential violent offenders are off the streets and behind bars. But certainly another factor is the implementation of essay were, a new law enforcement strategy known generally as “zero tolerance” policing. Zero tolerance policing grew out of the letter with no experience theories of sociologist James Q. God Their Topic Were! Wilson, who wrote some years ago that the failure to prosecute those who commit relatively minor, quality-of-life crimes would inevitably lead to an escalation of criminality until a condition is reached where events begin to spin out of control and neighborhood deterioration sets in. The principal laboratory for the implementation of zero tolerance policing has been New York City during the administration of Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Admission Essays! A former federal prosecutor, Giuliani ran on a tough-on-crime platform, and has instituted a number of initiatives designed to make New York safer and essay eyes topic were “more livable.” None has generated more controversy than mass arrests for pennsylvania history essays quality-of life misdemeanors: drinking or smoking marijuana in public, urinating in the street, subway fare beating, trespassing, reckless bicycle riding, and essay eyes were the like. Zero tolerance is credited with the revival of essay competition, several New York neighborhoods which had been plagued by an environment notable for drug use, drug sales, public intoxication, and essay eyes topic watching were groups of menacing young men—all out in the open with no intervention by the police. Zero tolerance produced almost immediate results in several target neighborhoods, including Greenwich Village and research pollution parts of Harlem. The result has been neighborhoods which are more hospitable to families and a spurt in economic development in areas which, a few years previously, had been regarded as beyond revival. There is, of course, a cost to zero tolerance and other new urban police techniques, which stems from the eyes watching rather substantial increase in encounters between the police and the public. In New York, hundreds of arrests are made each night for misdemeanors like public drinking and fare beating.
The accused are taken to the local precinct, booked, and often taken to the central holding area where they may remain overnight, after which they are arraigned before a judge who will ordinarily hand down a small fine, community service, or simply dismiss the case. Another aspect of no experience, zero tolerance is the arrest of petty drug dealers. Unlike the quality-of-life misdemeanors, drug sales of even the essay god their topic watching were small amount can be a serious matter; small-time drug dealers make up a sizeable proportion of the American prison population. Civil libertarians take a dim view of zero tolerance and are actively opposed to the war on drugs, objecting to the jailing of petty dealers and fretting over the preponderance of blacks arrested on drug counts. Here both civil libertarians and minority group spokesmen betray a certain amount of confusion. It was not so long ago that blacks decried the destructive force of narcotics in the inner city. Research Paper! Especially during the height of the crack cocaine epidemic, blacks blamed drugs for destroying black youth, driving the inner city middle class to the suburbs, and robbing minority neighborhoods of economic viability. True, black leaders were divided on the proper anti-drug strategy. Some called for a massive police drive against drug use, while others, uncomfortable with an arrest-and-punish approach, talked about ways of dealing with the “root causes” of crime. The problem with this latter approach is that the root causes—poverty, lack of essay god their, jobs, and economic development—will resist all efforts at betterment unless crime itself is brought under control. Furthermore, the root causes argument has been weakened somewhat by the recent experience of Europe.
Despite its elaborate social welfare protection and social democratic economic policies, Europe has undergone an increase in crime to the point where in countries like France, violent crime rates surpass those in the United States. Pennsylvania And Documents! Much of the increase in criminality is essay watching, attributed to unemployed, alienated non-white immigrant youths. Current In English! In response, some European countries have witnessed the rise of ultra-nationalist parties of the Right and demand that severe restrictions be placed on immigration. The United States has been spared this phenomenon. Topic Were! In fact, while the United States has implemented the democratic world’s harshest anti-crime regime, it has maintained a relatively liberal policy towards immigrants. Despite calls by a special commission on playground, immigration chaired by the late Barbara Jordan for a modest reduction in the number of legal immigrants, America has maintained the same, relatively high immigration level through periods of both boom and recession. Proposals to change the immigration balance, which now overwhelmingly favors Hispanics and Asians, to encourage a higher proportion of European immigrants, have been rejected, as have proposals to adjust immigration criteria to favor the educated and highly skilled. Thus the essay eyes god their topic watching charge advanced by one well-known human rights organization that the U.S. is undergoing a wave of anti-immigrant sentiment is patently false. In 1994, California’s voters adopted a measure which denied certain rights to illegal immigrants. Again, the current essays in english proposition affected only illegal aliens, and essay god their were the effect of the pennsylvania history essays and documents measure has been minimized by various court decisions.
Congress subsequently passed legislation denying welfare benefits to legal immigrants, a measure adopted in part because statistics indicated that a growing proportion of immigrants were on the welfare rolls. Essay Eyes Watching! There is a good chance that this restriction will be lifted, since both President Clinton and a number of Republicans have spoken in favor of removing a measure which singled out immigrants for special treatment. If America has not become hostile to legal immigrants, it is also true that many people are concerned over evidence that some of the newer immigrant groups were resisting assimilation into the broader American culture. Many immigrants seemed to regard American citizenship with indifference, and developed an interest in the naturalization process only essay on a playground, after the adoption of restrictions on immigrants access to essay god their topic watching were welfare. The notion that some immigrant groups were resistant to becoming “American” was fortified by immigrant constituency organizations, which sometimes spoke disparagingly of assimilation and pressed for government policies which would encourage immigrants to retain their cultural identity. Many Americans became skeptical of bilingual education, a technique for teaching immigrants which was supported with particular vigor by Hispanic organizations. Cover For English With No Experience! To many, bilingual education was a prime example of a policy of dubious educational merit which was kept in god their topic place for political reasons. Immigrants bring many benefits to pennsylvania essays a society like the United States. God Their Topic! They have played a critical role in the revival of American cities through their hard work and enterprising spirit. Current Essays In English! Many have brought with them traditional values of work, family, religious belief, education, and good citizenship. But high levels of immigration are not cost free, especially when the immigrants are ethnically and culturally different from the majority.
Furthermore, our current level of mass immigration takes place at a time of eyes, unprecedented expansion in the rights of minorities, with immigrants themselves quick to identify new and special “rights.” Thus, some have decried the history essays and documents policy of essay eyes, eliminating remedial courses at the City University of New York system as a violation of the rights of immigrants. Similarly, some see measures to essay playground roll back bilingual education as a violation of the right to an equal education, while others decry the essay eyes topic roll-back of affirmative action as the denial of the rights of current, blacks, Hispanics, and even relatively prosperous Asian groups. Thus, at the core of the essay eyes topic watching debate over the American condition is 2010, a conflict between those who believe that society’s strength lies in an elaborate and constantly expanding series of essay eyes god their topic, rights and those who understand that a safe and successful multinational democracy requires hard decisions and trade-offs between individual rights, the protection of minorities, and the requirements of the essay on a broader society. Essay Topic Watching Were! Most societies would not support the business school essays high levels of culturally diverse immigrants that the essay eyes god their watching were United States allows in each year. But even in America, the welcome mat would be withdrawn if high percentages of paper pollution, immigrants were on essay eyes god their topic watching were, welfare or if immigrants were a major contributor to uncontrolled violent crime. Likewise, the resistance to neighborhood or school integration will remain a substantial problem as long as high rates of crime prevail in minority neighborhoods. In this sense, the extraordinary crime reduction initiatives which have been undertaken in many cities should be regarded not as threats to civil liberties, but rather as measures which will over the long run strengthen both democracy and civil society. While the U.S. has adopted a stricter attitude towards crime control, this has not come at the expense of the constitutional rights of the American people, including criminal defendants. Current In English! Most of the procedural safeguards set down by the Supreme Court during the essay eyes watching 1960s remain in place. Business School! True, relations between the police and minority communities remain uneasy. But urban police departments are racially integrated, and a number of watching were, cities have appointed black officers as police chief.
Although bigoted police officers remain an unfortunate reality, the fact is that most deadly encounters between the police and black civilians involve black officers. Most police departments require better educated police officers than in the past, and essay canada new recruits are usually given extensive training in crowd control, community relations, and similar sensitive subjects. Veterans of the criminal justice field overwhelmingly say that police abuse is much less prevalent today than at any time in the past, and police racism is much less a problem than in the pre-civil rights period. It should be noted that America’s record in curbing crime and in accommodating diverse cultures compares quite favorably to current conditions in other countries. In societies like Russia and Mexico, uncontrolled crime ranks as the eyes greatest threat to democracy, political stability, and 2010 prosperity. Violent crime has led a number of Caribbean countries to make use of the death penalty. In Europe, robberies, assaults, and murders are on the rise in a number of countries, fueling demands to limit or cut off the flow of immigrants from essay topic watching Africa and the Middle East. European elites often express shock at the rough justice meted out by American courts, are appalled by America’s use of the death penalty, and continue to regard America as incurably racist 35 years after the abolition of legal segregation. Now, however, it is Europe which is confronting the challenge of cultural diversity, and while the pennsylvania history essays proportion of non-European immigrants in France, Germany, and elsewhere does not compare with American figures, Europe is finding the experience a painful one. In Germany alone, there have been more instances of ethnic violence in recent years than in the United States. Finally, no assessment of human rights in the U.S. would be complete without some consideration of the reflexively critical attitude towards America shared by many among our liberal elites.
A half-century ago, the U.S. was rightly regarded as having a serious human rights problem in the southern system of legal segregation and in the general denial of equal rights to non-whites. Ironically, America’s racial record was chastised much more severely after it had taken steps to dismantle segregation and other legal obstacles to equality. Indeed, the more America changed, the god their more tenaciously many critics, both here and abroad, held to the view of a society dominated by bigotry and “institutional racism.” During the latter stages of the playground Cold War, America was also accused of blocking popular revolution in essay god their topic watching Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Although the essay major human rights organizations did not join with those who branded America as the nerve center of world imperialism, they did criticize the U.S. for its support of El Salvador and other repressive Third World regimes. At the same time, some advocates of human rights resisted the idea that democracy was a precondition for the full flowering of personal liberty. To accept the democracy argument, they claimed, would be to side with one of the contending sides in the Cold War - the eyes god their watching West - and to automatically adopt a critical stance towards the Communist world, where democracy was unknown. The end of the Cold War, with its sudden and essays totally unexpected collapse of Soviet Communism, caught the critics of eyes god their watching were, America off-guard. America could no longer be regarded as imperialist, or even as tolerant of human rights abuses, since its so-called client states moved expeditiously towards democracy and national reconciliation, and many formerly Communist countries embraced both democracy and market reforms. It was predictable that the commonwealth competition U.S. would once again become a target for criticism, particularly since it emerged as the only country which could legitimately claim superpower status.
Although America no longer can be accused of essay topic, supporting “reactionary” regimes in Central America, it can, and is, derided for its failure to sign certain international covenants, such as the for english teacher with International Criminal Court. And since America cannot be criticized seriously for supporting repression abroad, it is increasingly attacked for tolerating official persecution of its own citizens at topic watching home. No society, and essay 2010 canada certainly not the U.S., should expect that its failings will be ignored by the international community. At the same time, America should not be judged by god their topic a more rigorous standard than is applied elsewhere. During the postwar period America has forged an cover letter for english no experience, impressive record in promoting the spread of democracy and the respect for individual rights throughout the world, and in god their watching were expanding human rights and civil liberties among its own people.
America’s record is all the more impressive because of its success in paper pollution building a peaceful and eyes watching were relatively integrated multinational society in an era in commonwealth 2010 which ethnic diversity is more often a source of division than of strength. Topic! An assessment of America’s human rights record which ignores this context does a serious injustice to the United States. More to the point, it ultimately does a disservice to the principles on which the human rights movement has been built. Arch Puddington is vice president for research at paper pollution Freedom House.
